Went to see Quantum of Solace last night and walked out of the cinema thinking 'what the hell was THAT all about'? This film in particular has lost the James Bond plot big style IMHO.

Bond films should:

Open (not end) with the moving iris thing tracking Bond across the screen to the Bond theme....Da da Dum, Da da dum, da da da da da etc

Follow that with a short piece of action which may or may not set the scene for the movie itself

Then we have the main theme tune and titles

The film itself which has:
A cat-stroking baddie who wants to take over the world by poisining everyone, causing a nuclear war, fixing news stories, monopolising world oil/microchip supplies etc.

Cars which fire rockets, have spikes in the wheel hubs, bullet proof shields, turn into submarines etc

Other gadgets hidden in pens or wris****ches which Bond uses to free himself at some point

Amusing exchanges with 'Q' as he explains all Bond's new toys to him

Pools full of electric eels, sharks, piranhas or whatever into which Bond falls at some point

Moneypenny

The new film has little if any of that, it may as well be subtitled The Bond Identity/Conspiracy due to its similar formula to The Bourne films.

What do other Goat film buffs think?

seems to me they have come over all "serious spy al la bourne" type of film with this one.

Maybe it's because Daniel "i am a serious actor you know" Craig would'nt want to stoop to having to use gadgets, bed numerous women, and have a quip or to with Q.

Although some of the older bond films did become quite stupid and over the top (moonraker methinks) I feel like the true spirit of bond will be lost to some "right on" filmakers.

I liked Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and thought Quantum would be sooo much better.......but I walked out feeling fairly flat. A nice start then mediocre from therein....what a shame!!!!
My lad loved it though, but hes 12 and likes lego so there is no comparision!!!!!
Lets hope for some gadgets next time around......maybe some Lego gadgets????

I am glad they got rid of the gadgets because they had just gone overboard with them, it is like the bourne films but I enjoyed them.

I think just one or two gadgets that are realistic would be fine, but watches that fire laser beams, invisible cars, x ray glasses, the list is endless.

But aren't they a series of five films showing how bond becomes the person he is? so maybe a few more gadgets will turn up in the next ones. Must admit I have really liked these last 2 films but the it would have been difficult for them to be as bad as any of the Pierce Brosnan ones.

Nice to see they're finally making proper Bond films. Flemings Bond wasn't a fop, he was a hard man not a pussy, a government hardcase with a license to kill.
I'm sorry but I think Roger Moore made him a joke, his acting was so sh1te they had to have gadgets and big stunts to sell the films.
Personally, I can't wait to see how a REAL actor does in the role.

Casino Royale was fantastic. Bourne was a Bond rip off. Time for James to reclaim his crown.

Fleming wrote some excellent stories. Brocolli ruined most of them.

The Roger Moore era films were a joke, they almost put me off Bond. Connery was the man, Dalton wasn't bad, he just had ****e screenplays to work with, Brosnan was ok. I think the Daniel Craig films are the way Bond should be.

The gadgets got too far fetched in the Brosnan films, as did some of the action sequences.

It's good to see Dame Judi Dench back as M.

The new films are all seemingly based around how Bond started, so no Q Branch, no Miss Monneypenny i have read a a few of Flemings originals and to be truthful Broccolis interpretation is wide of the mark and many scenes from one book are added to scenes in another book, an example of this was the scene from For Your Eyes Only when they are tied behind a motor boat and dragged over coral hoping the sharks would have them, however this action is taken from the book Live and Let Die.

I have enjoyed both films and can see why they may upset some fans, but these are getting back to the gritty style of the books, but at the same time are we not seeing the introduction of a new super baddy agency like SPECTRE

Agree with all of that
Also did Mike Myers and the Austin Powers films also kill off the jokey bad guys and gadgets of the "old bond" films?

I take youtr point, but when Peter Jackson made the Lord of the Rings films he was lambasted by officiandos of Tolkein's books for not following them precisely; scenes shifted around, stuff missed out etc etc. And yet they are still some of the most popular movies of all time. Books that make good reading for the 'anoraks' don't always translate literally into films that make good viewing for the general public, some artistic licence is necessary.
I have always known that Bond films didn't follow the plots of the books they took their titles from and I think most people who enjoyed movies did so because they were just good entertainment with action and a touch of wry humour following a preset formula as I outlined above. That said, yes some of them were rather silly; Octopussy still annoys me because it takes the gags too far.
I guess what I'm saying is that I'll just have to appreciated the new series of films for what they are rather than try to comapre them with the earlier ones. However I definately think that there are better (non-Bond) action type films than Quantum of Solace.

If I read one more " this is the real flemming bond" I will scream!
The films have been popular for 40 yrs! so they did something right.
Flemmings bond never took real joy from killing as I recall from the books I have read. They have to change with the times and have done. Gadgets are part of film Bond, and make it entertaining and I think even Danny Craig wants to see some gadgets back...but no more invisable cars...!
