Avatar sizes

I know that size isn't everything...

But how do I increase the size of my avatar?

I looked at the editing page and it says...

"Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 120 by 120 pixels or 488.3 KB (whichever is smaller). "

There is a goater whose avatar is 144x200pixels 7.73kB. So is this rule set in stone? How do I get around it?

I let the goat resize mine when it uploaded the image. Aparently that is 160px × 200px. The original was a lot bigger than that.
