If you've got some old tat lying around why not sell it to the RAF - the replacement for the Nimrod R1s are older than the Nimrods FFS.

"Ironically the RC-135 airframes are expected to be even older than the Nimrods they will replace, the latter being constructed in the early 1970s"

Isn't the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod based on the De Havilland Comet, the worlds first jet airliner? So in theory older than an RC-135 ?

Plus the RC-135 shares the same Boeing 707 airframe as an E-3 Sentry. Handy for Waddo.

You also have to take into account the support package offered by the constructor. Boeing might simply be able to support RC-135 much better and more importantly, cheaper, than the Nimrod R1 was.
