Morning All,

I have just over a year left in post at my current unit, before I'm posted.

So starting to have a think about where to go next, not that I get much choice, something that has caught my interest & would be a new challenge is Airborne Technician on Sentry. (I am an Av Sgt).

I have a look through AP3392 (think its Vol 15) containing all the relevant leaflets on applying for various out of trade or 'unique' jobs, SAS, Red Arrows etc, but I can't find anything repeating to applying for Airborne Tech.

Does anybody know where this information exists or friends that have applied for AT?

All info, gratefully received!

The trawl on manning should tell you as much. If not, exercise your 'right' as a SNCO to contact the advert sponsor directly.

(Yes, I've been bollocked on more than one occasion for daring to do so as a Junior because the UCA at my old unit was bloody useless!)

This maybe a stupid question, as I've never worked on E-3D but wouldn't you need to be on 8 or 54 sqn first? I would have thought they recruit internally, using experienced guys.

Some are and some aren't. You are either a radar tech, comms tech or display tech. Comms tech always looked more interesting from the perspective of being part of the team as you would/will spell the AEOp on the radios as well as doing your tetchy stuff. They are a close knit bunch at home and on det...their specialist skills include black ops drinking and making me sh1t cups of tea...the E3 world is an odd one from my point of view coming across from Nims...quite siloed crews components...the aircraft is treated like an airborne bunker by the Scopies and there was far too many dry dets when it was totally unnecessary to do so...it did for me in the end and I banged out.

Not that you'll ever get up in the jet, 'permanently f***ed' sounds about right

As an instructor I averaged [from memory] about 12-20 hours a month...Mainly checking people so not getting much kit time. Not enough to keep competant on IMO. I think it would be a struggle to get those kinds of hours now unless away somewhere...
