They went to war for the adventure, knowing full well that they could be killed.

This way they are getting advanced notice.

No sympathy whatsoever.

I believe both Britons had lived in Ukraine since 2018, and one is married to a Ukrainian (or their partner is Ukrainian). He was a Ukrainian marine well before the Russian invasion so I would say they're not adventurers looking for a war but were fighting for their adopted country.

Indeed, they were already serving the Ukrainian military well before this kicked off and should be treated as POWs in accordance to the Geneva Convention protocols of 1949 that Russia signed. But Putin and the other animals don't care less.

It’s just politics, another reason why the ending of hostilities cannot be an end to sanctions on Russia.

Wrong - both lived in Ukraine prior to the invasion. You are a frequent visitor to this site and have been on at least twice since you have been told you were wrong, yet have chosen to leave your post as it stands.

It appears that Aslin had purposely gone to Syria to fight against Da'esh before his eventual move to Ukraine.

Whilst his excursion to the Middle East may have been inspired by romantic notions of beating an internationally abhorred ideology, his joining of the Ukraine Military seems to be 100% legitimate.

Whatever, the fact is they have been captured and the two of them now have given huge political leverage in Putin's favour.

GB. "Don't kill our citizens...."

Vlad. "Stop sending weapons that kill my troops".

...and so it continues.

Agreed. The two Britons moved to Ukraine in 2018 and appear to have settled there. One had moved there with his wife, the other is engaged to a local girl and had applied for citizenship. They were part of the legitimate Ukraine military and should be treated as POWs but it seems too good an opportunity for Russia to pass up to use them for propaganda and political purposes.

Not sure just how much leverage we really have with Putin's regime probably not enough to bring about a change of plan from the Russian authorities. We could send a stern memo, maybe a strongly worded letter, huff and puff at the despatch box but actual practical things...............
We could stop helping Ukraine, we could aquess to Putins plan to annex large parts of the country, we could release some yachts but...........

There's unconfirmed reports that Aiden Aslin and three others have been released and transported to Saudi Arabia after some sort of political intervention....
