Depends how much you are after.

But you have to have a reason. The main reasons for which advances of pay are issued, e.g., on posting overseas, are listed in JSP 754 (don't have a copy on my home PC, sorry!). One of the reasons is listed as "CO's discretion" or something similar and is a catch-all to cover all the other reasons that might justify an advance of pay but cannot be listed.
In reality, it means convincing your Chf Clk that you are deserving of an advance, the success of which is determined by his level of compassion. An advance to cover a shortfall because you have been underpaid is one thing, I have never yet seen anyone given an advance because they have exceeded their overdraft.

Advance of allowances is no bother, but pay? You'd have to put up a good case to the chief clerk.

Why is it an advance of pay if you have been under paid? surely you should get the money you are entitled to and not an advance that you pay back?

Advance comes quickly.
