Mr Cameron wants to back Turkeys' bid to join the EU...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-10767768

David Cameron is to argue strongly for Turkey's membership of the European Union, saying he is "angry" at the slow pace of negotiations.

After the debacle we've just had with Greece being as good as bankrupt, and Spain and Ireland struggling why is there any rush to let anyone else in?

Why don't we give it 5 or 10 years first and see what happens to Greece etc? Pushing for other Countries to join ASAP is crazy.

Don't get confused between the EU and the Euro!
I agree the countrys you mentioned jumped into the Euro
and had 'cooked the books' to do so. Hence thier bailout (Greece)
The EU is a 2 way street and the development opportunities in
Turkey are there. At the moment we lose out due to Visa and Import /Export
Regs. The yanks, russians and even the Chinese are caning us for buissness there!
Let 'em in I say!:pDT_Xtremez_30:

One of the conditions for them entering the EU is the matter of Cyprus being sorted out..... Otherwise the Greeks will vote no and they won't be allowed in.
We might finally get Cyprus sorted out :pDT_Xtremez_14:

Nothing to do with the fact that Turkey is predominantly Muslim and seen by many as a 'bridge' between the West and East.

If the countries further east can see that a muslim country can enjoy all of the joys of the west, keep its religion without the fanatical hardline, people will start to turn their backs on the fundementalists and want to join them..... and the Islamic hardliners will lose their grip on countries one by one.

Call me a cynic and all, but lets face it Turky's human rights records aren't very good, their economy is screwed - what else could it be?

As stated in a previous post, the business opportunities are there, however also there are the opportunities for more people to flood into the UK with no restrictions and claim benefits!

Besides which, how many kebab shops can we stand?

Interesting take on the matter FOMz.

Alternatively, those very same could use Turkey's membership to turn their backs on on the fundementalists by flooding into the newly expanded europe via Turkey as asylum seekers.
