Hi, new to the forum, joining as an AMM on the 1st September, final interview is this coming friday!!

Just wondering what the chances of being able to get the RAF to pay for me to get my class C+E LGV licence?? I realise this wouldn't be for a while but just wanted to know if there is any need for an AMM to drive the big stuff! I kinda fancy having the licence as well, just a nice extra qualification to have really.

Answered slightly more comprehensively in your other thread but short answer.

No. Why would an AMM need to drive a lorry?

They do on SH squadrons.

AMMs?

Ok, I will take your word for it not being SH myself, however that must be brilliant, personally we just about get them up to speed with aircraft servicing before they go back on FT without losing them off to go and get driving licenses.

He isn't going to be an AMM forever though either is he? So maybe unlikely as an AMM, but plently of techies have C/C+E in certain environments.

The only way you'll be able to get hold of an HGV licence plus maybe the Hazmat Q as well would be if your role requires it. Just being part of a SH unit is no guarantee either. Same goes for Bike licences as well if indeed they are still handed out.

Do we still have PIC (If that is indeed the correct acronym) numbers for annotating what skill sets a Sqn / Unit member requires?

Be aware though it'll be another tick in the box for any juicy OOA's coming your way. Do you fancy driving large bullet magnets round Afghanistan?

Do you think that makes a difference? AFAIK when PMA look at getting someone into a slot they just send the next person and then they get given the relevant Q's for the job. I have every driving licence going thanks to the RAF (cept busses) and I've not been pinged to do anything out of trade. As he's going to be a techie then he'll prolly get his OOA's with his Sqn so the chances of him going into another pick are slim.... course I may very well be wrong, I'm no Admin Tech! ;)

We both could be right. I would imagine it being easier for them to send someone who is due on the DWR and has the relevent Q's rather than to send someone for additional training?

That heavily depends on your OOA turn around times, I know quite a few Non-Sqn SAC(T) that have been sent driving as they would otherwise sit for years waiting for a VASS slot somewhere.

Thanks for the replys although at this rate i'm not sure i'm even joining, got a call from the AFCO the day before my Final interview (yesterday) saying it was cancelled while the RAF decide how much future manpower they need or something like that!!! My drafting date WAS the 1st of September but that is also now probably changed!

How about concentrating on passing training and learning spannering skills before wanting to do HGV courses....

Or if you are so desperate to drive HGV's - why didn't you join as a door slammer?

I would say unlikely but not impossible, these acorns can fall from unusual trees. I was an SAC Fairy in the bay, when a Det came in for the Falklands as a driver.
This was a cushy 4 month tour, all with a "nice" trip to Leconfield to pick up LGV (cat c)

Most folk in the GEF world pick it up nowadays for OOA due to the procurement of a certain type of generator. It's probably not that unlikely as it only takes one poorly thought out decision by the procurement agency to throw everything off.
