I keep hearing/reading about the forthcoming SDSR that is happening this year.

Has it already started? Who is doing it? Do we know when the results will be published?

It's ongoing, the Green paper was published in Feb this year and it's expected to be completed by October with a White paper due by the end of the year.

Yes the "consultation" process is on going. The Defence permenant under secretary was at a secret west midlands training base very recently and had a Q&A session with interested parties. She very ably demonstrated a formidable talent in not giving a direct answer to any question posed. When asked if DTR was part of the SSDR process she answered the question for fully 5 minutes without ever using the words yes or no.

What do you expect, she is no position to say anything as the study will still be getting information together. As a Civil Servant she will not have the final say as that will be for the Ministers. She will have the job of implementing it. A slip up or a hint towards a specific area for cuts would be in the papers rapidly and the internal chaos that could follow such a comment could cause even more problems.

One of Cameron's "babes" (like "Blair's babes" before)?

A straight answer!!! Is the defence training review included in SDSR? Yes or No would have done, she had no need to present any figures, suggest cuts, make statements of intent or let metophorical cats out of bags just simply say if it was within the scope of the big SDSR review. She very tactfully and skillfully didn't say anything you could pin down in the whole Q&A session.

Yes that's her

It could be that she just didn't know! But did you really think you would get a straight reply, a Yes or No could easily cause as many issues as saying that a training unit will shut in 6 months and then finding out it isn't.

You would like to think that she new the answer...

Seeing as one of her responsibilities is the Defence Training Review.

She was only asked whether DTR was being looked at as part of SDSR or was it being considered as a completely separate thing.

I do know that a lot of work was put on hold at St Athan before the election depending on who won, given that Labour had already committed to DTR I think we can maybe guess the answer.

The official line is that all aspects of the MOD, with the exception of the Trident Replacemt Programme, are under review by SDSR. Why would DTR not be included?

Perhaps for the same reason Project Future Brize and the closure of Lyneham isn't?

So what else is allegedly/actually exempt from the supposed all encompassing SDSR review?
