Considering airfields are reporting the ash layer at heights between 100 and 1000ft, it'll never work. It would also be commercial suicide. Imagine your airliner fling at 1000ft for 200 miles..... you'll burn so much fuel, you won't be able to get far or move many pax.

Some people are just talking out of their hoops and the paps are once again trying to fuel a non existant fire.

Not that you can see directly unless you have scientific measuring equipment for eyeballs.

There hasnt been any A/C movement here at Brize since this all began, although I think I heard someone say they got one flight out thursday or friday morning; not that I heard it.

I think we might have a crack at it tomorrow night, from what i can discern by reading between the lines. Just the first mentions of questionable plausability in the releases............I am still booked on the star for my weekly outing, just in case.

Yeah, well that just people today for you FOMz, nobody seems to like being told things they don't want to hear by 'experts'. They claim they are being talked down to, as one hoop-talker accused me of doing the other day as I patiently tried to explain why you can't 'just fly below the cloud' or 'just use propeller powered aicraft'.
The trouble is, what started as an interesting and different event is starting to get serious in many ways, and the clamour has already started by the internet experts to get things going again because the authorities have obviously over-reacted.

Quite a few airlines have flown non passenger flights and so far suffered no ill effects. KLM Lufthansa and Air Berlin are the three, I think. The key to sorting out is getting more information, there may be parts of europe that ok to fly in. The problem is there isn't enough info, the amount of particulates in the air, that brought about the ban, were calculated from a computer program, I don't think any testing was done.

There is also the problem that it is mobile, what is clear today may well be contaminated airspace tomorrow.

Being 4 days late for getting home the Navy will not have any bearing on my return considering I'm stuck in the land locked ****hole called Afghanistan. I've heard some rumours and read the same on the Guardian website that some troops have been flown to Spain and then picked up by the Royal Navy to get home.

Also, I've also heard through the grapevine that the Timmy is tits up in Cyprus.....which is now adding a massive extra extra burden to the already massive delays expected out here.

Nevermind think of the extra rates

BA have flown a 747 out over the Atlantic and back at various flight levels, the a/c is now under going checks at Cardiff. BA Chief Exec Willie Walsh was also onboard.

Bit of a vague report to be honest - no indication of time, date, location, vicinity of ash clouds.

Agreed. Big lack of details. I'd expect an F16 to have suffered damage almost a week ago flying close to the incident but a week later over central Europe? I bet there is nowt wrong with that BA747. Have they released any reports on that yet?

I'd happily fly today with no worries at all. Its H&S in overdrive. Get them back in the air. (I want to go on holiday next week!)

UK airspace to re-open Tuesday.

"Airspace in Scotland is to reopen from 0700 tomorrow as dust from the Icelandic volcano ceases to affect UK airspace. Manchester Airport is to open at 0900 tomorrow but passengers are being warned to contact their airline before travelling to the airport.
Sky sources understand airspace in the Midlands will reopen at 1200 and southern UK at 1800.

Air traffic control company Nats is lifting restrictions restrictions for Scotland and parts of the North of England."

More here.
