I always fall asleep when I'm out with you and Nat on the pish......I wonder why ;)

Anyway, back on topic. Obviusly being out of the UK loop I don't know whats going on with RAF flights. Is the whole chabang grounded or are the RAF still flying?

At FOM O'Clock yesterday, the only things allowed to fly in UK airspace were private GA and only beneath 5000ft AMSL. There were occasional flights out of Scotland, but not many.

National Air Traffic Services updates

Met Office Volcanic Ash charts

Brize Norton Flight Info

As you can see, there is no way of getting you into the country safely, at this time.

And RAF/RN SAR assets are allowed in the air too but only for life-or-death situations (i.e. not the usual tired students stuck up a mountain in their trainers and trackie-bottoms:pDT_Xtremez_25: ), not sure about civvy Coastguard, etc, the penalty being an aircarft decontam on landing (ECU comp wash + aircraft foam wash).

And I hate to upset you even further Wobbly but there are actually 2 volcanoes close to each other... the 2nd one hasn't popped yet but the Icelandic Professional Volcano people are saying that the one that has erupted may have a knock on effect on the other... could drag on for months this could :pDT_Xtremez_26:

And as for this:- http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pressoffice/2010/volcano.html
the Met man up here at ISL cast doubt on the accuracy of the charts this morning by pointing out to us that he had been monitoring falls of ash actually on station over night even though the chart says that we should have been in the clear. :pDT_Xtremez_21:

Bloody typical that I was due to fly back from Afghanistan over the next few days and now it looks like I'm ****ing lumbered with ****ing volcano ash stopping me from getting back to Blighty. What else could possibly go wrong? Wanking Iceland!!!!

There's gonna be a few guys that have creamed in big time if they are on R&R at the moment, a few extra days at home.

Just spent the afternoon in the garden of 'Fuse Mansions. Mrs 'Fuse commented that there was an horizon to horizon clear blue sky but not a single vapour trail to be seen. I can't say if I've ever seen such a sky before.

In the days following 9/11 you would have done. I wonder if it will make any difference to the air quality like it supposedly did back then, despite the fact there's millions of tons of nasty acidic volcanic ash in the atmosphere. No doubt the Greenies will go on about it :pDT_Xtremez_19:

I live between Liverpool and Manchester Airports and underneath a very busy corridor of passenger stuff, choppers and light aircraft and it's not often that we don't hear aircraft, but this is eerie, there's even a lack of choppers and light aircraft.

One thing that this does show, is that air travel and air transport are vital to our economy and our way of life. Apparently we'll be seeing shortages of fresh veg in the next few days with stocks in far off places rotting away.

Aircraft are essential. Simple as that.

Mind you, it is nice to have silence on a Saturday evening!! ( I live under a flight path to the local airport!! No spotting for me today :pDT_Xtremez_14::pDT_Xtremez_42:

Point taken on aircraft movement post 9/11. But it was early autumn then with cloudyish skies.

It's so bitter sweet.

If it goes on it spells only crap for our business, and a threat to all, but hell, it is just so nice just to stop for 10 minutes..........

After 9/11 the temeratures actually rose! this was down to vapour trail clouds not reflecting energy back into space (allegedly)

I read somewhere that any such emergency flights are going into another [participating] country for facilities...
