I'm just about to buy a house (to prevent me having to live in that doss hole Carterton when Lyneham finally closes its doors to, apparently, let the pongo's from Gutersloh destroy the area) and would like to know if I can get anything from the RAF to help pay for solicitors fees etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

Maybe look down the LSAP route.

Or if its on posting and your selling up try looking at RLE (Refund of Legal Fees)

Yeah, LSAP can be used for solicitors costs, including surveys etc. Otherwise the only time you can get assistance for legal fees etc is if you are both selling and buying.

What I've done

What I've done

In the process of moving myself at the moment, not on a posting so unable to claim anything and as it's a move from one place to another no chance of LSAP (I've only got just over a year left anyway). In the end I went to Nationwide and managed to get a mortgage that was fee free and free legals for the purchase.

This has taken about £1500/2000 out of the transaction and made things a bit easier, I'm only paying a slightly higher interest rate, but if I hadn't got the free bits above I would be in the next interest rate up anyway which would be more than I'm paying having received the freebies.

Additionally if you're already a Nationwide customer, Flexaccount holder, you can get a further discount on your mortgage and they do 90% mortgages, 95% if you've got a good mortgage history, although the lowish rates start when you get to 85% and below.

I am sure if you are posted you can claim legal fees (upto 5k) without having to have something to sell, was upto 6 months to show an interest in buying, even if the actual sale takes a bit longer. Don't know how you stand if you haven't been posted yet?

Those legal fees can be used for the stamp duty element too. Be carefull and check what effect this will have on any HTD as if you choose to buy far away and then try to claim HTD as well as RLE then there may be some limits especially if you claim disturbance too. I suffered from this a while back but pre JPA/ JSP.

LSAP if a good way to go, but all depends on how long you have got left to pay it back. I never knew about it when i bought so was a bit gutted when I found out, would have gone for about 5K which would have helped with the deposit.
