Wanted: RAF Greatcoat

Hi guys

Just wondered if anyone had for sale, or knew where I could buy, an RAF Great Coat?

I've seen loads of them on eBay and the likes but, alas, never in my size. Perhaps it's cos I'm a fat git? :pDT_Xtremez_15:

I'm about 5'11" and am 44" around the chest in a T shirt, 34" waist.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Martin

Hi there

Well, as per my post in the Intro threads, I am a civvy but have been around aviation all my life. Wanted a great coat ever since I was a kid and, for some reason, never quite got around to buying one.

With winter approaching and my old coat looking a little shabby, I thought why not kill two birds with one stone and satisfy an un-met childhood want with a need for a new coat.

Cheers

Martin

p.s. what's a walt?

Got to ask, why do you want one? They're only worn for ceremonial duties nowadays....and you'll get one issued if you need it.

Unless you're a Wing Commode/Gruppen fuhrer or above.......

Many thanks for the links. Just checked them and, unfortunately, neither of them has stock.

Also, and this may be a dumb question, the second link shows the coat buttoned up "the girly way". Do they button up both sides, or are they flogging off ladies coats?

"Walt" aka Walter Mitty; i.e. people who pretend to have served when they haven't or fabricate/embellish their service. Uber-Walts usually claim to have been on the balcony during the embassy seige or have killed over 100 people etc etc. You get the idea.

Why do you want to go around smelling of mothballs? By the way, if you do get yourself one, just remember to get it nice and wet. That way you'll understand why nobody wears them anymore. :pDT_Xtremez_14:

You may not believe it, but for those of us who spend more time in blues than in greens/coveralls, the old greatcoat is actually coming back into 'fashion', similarly to how the old forage caps came back in a few years ago. Although they're only issued for ceremonial duties, I have it on good authority that as they are still within the uniform regs they can be worn during the winter as part of No.2's dress.

They're also really popular in civvy street with the futuretech nerds - Dr. Who/Torchwood/Capt. Jack fans...

If you have one, dig it out of storage now and get it on Ebay, because they're only going to be worth a bit before they start to re-issue a cheap version!! Actually forget Ebay, if you're still 'in' and have a greatcoat you no longer need (or you're now too fat for), get on the intranet and the RAF global sales and wants page.... keep it in the faaaamly....

...no offence civvies...:pDT_Xtremez_30:

Used to wear one myself in the 90's while serving aus Deutschland - those central European winters can be a bit chilly to say the least. Dug it out a few years ago at Marham but alas it didn't fit anymore. It wasn't in the best condition by then so I donated it to a nearby skip. Wish I still had one, it kept me really warm.
