Are the police using their right to enter vehicles or just stealing? Seems to me like something a teacher would do in school, a sort of "You can get it back at the end of the day thing"

To be honest if I left a laptop on the seat of an unlocked car, I would be quite chuffed to find out it was the coppers who had taken it rather than some pondlife.

I would also be stupid for leaving a laptop in plain view in an unlocked car but that is a different matter....
