Deano Banned From Coaching

I to used to think a lot of Deano, surely one the best no8's in the world. How on earth did he get mixed up in this pathetic to say the least. But I am still a little bit mistified as to how you can fake a blood injury, perhaps it is easier than I thought.

Its been happening since 5 minutes after the 'blood bin' law was brought in. Every team has used it, but Hardlywins have been caught out by overdoing it. Want to rest your player? fake a blood injury. It was blatantly false, couldn't have been more obvious even if he was wearing a sign saying 'this is a fake blood injury'.

Length of the bans?.. fine by me. You cheat, you get caught you play the penalty, simple as that.

Theatrical blood pellet, allegedly. Easily obtainable, just bite into it instant blood injury, what is disturbing is the allegations that the player then had his face cut with a scalpel to provide 'proof', there are more people than Deano and the player involved and he whilst undoubtably aware of the whole fiasco has taken the fall for for a few others I suspect:pDT_Xtremez_21:

The scale of it is what shocked me about this. Props with sudden hamstring injuries leading to uncontested scrums is one thing (and I am not saying it is legit) but the pre-planning and number of people involved in this was what shocked me. The player himself, the coach, the doctor and the physio and the admission that Hardlywins had done this on at least 4 other occasions boggled my brain a bit. I wonder if it is competitive nature or pressure from sponsors etc that drives people to cheat to that scale but I am gutted that someone of Deanos stature was involved in something like this.

Was it just me being sinicle or didn't a similar thing happen during the other semi final between Cardiff and Leicester, when the Tigers scrum half and main penalty kicker Julien Dupuy went off injured in the 73rd minute and with a 26-12 lead the game in the bag. Then with penalty kicks looming Dupuy came back on towards the end of extra time for the "injured" Dan Hipkiss ! Although it's a bit late now I think this should be looked at as much as the Quins incident.

Having listened to the news reports on this, it does sound as if Deano was falling on his sword for the greater good here. Or is that just rose tinted glasses on my part?

However one thing I had not realised is that a doctor went in and allegedly cut the player with a scalpel after the event, in an attempt at a cover up, and was represented at the enquiry by a QC who specialises in medical negligence.

Perhaps some of the medical types could throw some light on whether this is a case for being struck off?

These are black days indeed for a sport I have enjoyed playing and watching for 40 odd years. I think that there should be an immediate and close scrutiny of the issues raised by this and even the slightest sniff of cheating should be stamped on and severe punishments awarded. We may then start get some of the respect back we once enjoyed in the game.

I think Deano has been done by the establishment and made an example of, he has never been in the RFU's good books and its a waste of a good coach.

I don't condon cheating but I feel 3 years is extreme, the original 1 year was enough.

I seem to remember a certain current tigers manager having his finger cut during a world cup competition to allow a player change.

You can take the player/coach out of Leicester, but you can't take Leicester out of the player/coach etc etc

I think Deano has been made an example of by the RFU (in an attempt to stop cheating in the game). I don't condone what he and others have done. It brings the glorious game of rugby union into disrepute and makes it no better than all the cheating barstewards in kissball!

However since Union went proffessional, the pressures of management have increased. It's all down to sponsors, corporate hospitality and ultimately money, just like all other professional sports.

I also think that the changes in the laws, ie uncontested scrums, allowing players back on the field after substituion etc. have changed the game for the worst. If you are going to allow subs, then increase the number on the bench and include more front row players to allow for injuries.

The game I love both as a former player and as a fan is going down the pan fast. Professionalism has bought many improvements to the game, but at what cost?

Yep, no more adopting the moral highground over the superior sport of football now eh? :pDT_Xtremez_14:

I guy I work with played pro for Northampton and said that "cutting" was a regular occurrence.

So much for squeaky clean rugby eh?

On the BBC web Deano has stated what he did and why he did it, however he knew nothing about the actual cutting of the mouth until later. I don't condone his actions however I do feel he is carrying more than his fair share of the blame. As has been stated he is deffinately being made a skategoat for this to cover the RFU and the IRB's lack of action over cheating.

The authorities have to wake up and realise that this is now a professional game, with that comes lots of money at the highest level, therefore people will always be liable to cheat. At the top level the players have come through acadamys that teach how to win and how to cheat, thus many of these players have had little experiance of amatuer ethos in small clubs and officials need to understand this.

There are plenty of examples of all kinds of cheating in many sports. Now is the time for the RFU and the IRB to get tough and sort this and drug issues out and get serious programmes in place.

And you honestly think that some of the 'roid monsters in league never cheat? talk about looking at a problem with one eye:pDT_Xtremez_25:

Didn't say that cheating never happened in RL. A bit touchy aren't we?

This thread is about Bloodgate; wouldn't happen in Rugby League as there would be nothing to gain from it.

Both eyes wide open thank you.

Different rules for subs in RL so as cr says nothing to gain, perhaps something for union to learn from and bring the same subs system in.
