Well folks, after years of wanting to buy a remote control helicopter, I indulged myself yesterday and spent 200 quid on a beginner model and a training undercarriage.

I followed the instructions, charged the battery and took my new machine into the garden to play.

So there I was, checking that the servo's were working and that the head and anti torque were responding to the correct inputs (no throttle or pitch applied when without warning, the rotors ran up to max chat and my new machine flipped over and smashed itself to pieces.

Mrs TW is not impressed with my short lived hobby. (20 hours from purhase to smithereens.)

No chance!!!

I reckon I'm just about to become the master of RC Heli repairs, plus it gives me the chance to buy more stuff for my new "hobby"!!!

(new set of rotor bades, £6.99. Head spares £10.)

Wooohooo.

Roll back the clock 2 years and that's precisely what happened to me - well actually I spend sh1tloads of time hovering it just off the ground then got brave and flew it straight into the hangar wall, fixed it and flew it straight into a real Sea King - got 4 of the fekkers now though:pDT_Xtremez_42:

Surely you should have bought half an Argentine RC helicopter and expertly bodged the two pieces together.

Which model have you got as a matter of interest TW? I've got a little 3 channel 'Apache' job which I fly around the hangar and its pretty controllable, bar a small collision with the roof gear! But I'd like something bigger with a proper main and tail rotor, not the counter-rotating rotor and vertical tail motor like the apache has.

PSBM,

I bought an ESKY King 3 electric (brushless motor).

My mistake was to misunderstand the function of the 3D flying switch which provides full positive and negative pitch on the pitch/ gas lever with the mid position of the control as a hover function. I lost control because I didn't know how to use the control properly

I have just bought a 6 channel simulator to hone my "skills" and learn the correct function of the 3D switch.

Also, once i've got the spare parts and repaired the chopper, I will once more venture into the garden and have a practice on my soon to be constructed tie down facility to test the head and the pitch alignment. (two heavy bricks attached to the skids with some ty-raps )

This is how you are supposed to fly it!!

Aha, just the one I've been looking at!

Cheers.

Just for info, the spares seem to be quite cheap and easily available on line. I felt like upgrading to an alu head but will stick to plastic because it won't cost as much to repair when I inevitably trash the bl00dy thing again.

One of the funniest things I've seen was one of the lads with more money than sense bringing in his £400 state of the art RRC Nitro buggy thingy.

To be fair, it was bloody quick with a claimed top speed of over 80mph. That thing hits your ankles your going to know about it.

Anyways, one of the lads comes over and asks for a shot.

'You do know how to control one of these don't you?'

'Oh yeah, loads of times!'

No less than 10 secs later, you see it roar off under a long low HGV trailer, cleanly snapping the top of the engine off.
