A Suggestion For charity

Many years ago, a former colleague of mine hit upon the idea of compiling a book which captured stories from RAF personnel across the years.

We've all got our own specific stories to tell - at some stage during our time in the RAF we have encountered something that has made us laugh like girls - be it on det or in the UK. How many times have you sat in the NAAFI and listened to someone regale you with a story which seems just too funny to be true?

As an example, i was chatting with another ex RAF type yesterday and the subject of ND's came up - and some of the stories we have heard during our combined service made us larf a bit...

My suggestion would be to try and compile something similar, perhaps with the assistance of someone with a flair for drawing cartoons, then approach a publisher and see if it would be worth selling, with proceeds going to Help the Heroes or something....

What do you think? Worth a shot?

Whilst i agree with the sentiment , I enjoy a good laugh as much as anyone else, most stories of this type normally centre on somebodys fuc$ up do they not? Do we really need a book advertising this?

I think a lot would depend on the stories and who it would be aimed at. Remember civvies(yes I know I am one) don't all have the same sense of humour as the forces.

Some time ago after GW1 if I remember right there was a book like this published. It was called "There I was at 20,000 ft" and strangely enough the bloke who compiled it had a name like Spencer (not me and no relation). I think all the proceed's went to the RAFBF. I could be wrong but I think its already been done.:pDT_Xtremez_42:

They also did one called "Up the Falklands" which i found in my old T-Bar at ISK, managed to get a copy from Amazon.

It had cartoons about the invasion in a similar style to the sun political cartoons. I think it was produced by some army WO1/2s

A lot of good points raised thus far....and one that has just been pointed out to me is that a forum such as E-Goat is perhaps a much better place for these kind of stories, as AllWoman says not everyone gets Forces humour and some of the stories may be lost in translation....

Never mind...it was just a thought...

Sorry to spoil what is a good idea mate and if you want I will get the ISBN number from the copy of the book I bought for my dad. You never know if you follow it up you might be able to get the book reissued and; if you can get the permissions in place, have the proceeds go to Help for Heroes. Its an idea.:pDT_Xtremez_30:

Cheers pal.

Right here we go, the book was called

"There I was at 20,000 feet..." The best of RAF humour
by a bloke called Jack Spence and the ISBN number is 0-7137-2147-2
It was issued by Blandford an imprint of Cassell, Villiers House 41/47 Strand London WC2N 5JE in 1990.

Hope this helps.
