Life in the block really gets to me. If you hear of an airman in a drying room, hanging with a rope - thats me. Recently posted, and my last oven had a block in it, my new block doesn't.

Why don't they trust us with oven/hobs? The two old answers are that they don't have to provide them as you pay for food.

However, when you ask the question about providing your own ovens/hobs - the answer is that its a fire risk, or at some camps - they don't even tell you why.

How is it any more of a fire risk than a microwave oven, or any other kit.

Some people would say why do you need it - you have the mess or a microwave, or a george foreman.

I like currys. I like home baking.

Try making a korma on a george foreman, or cookies in a microwave - don't be daft!

Similar feelings. I like the block, and I use the mess, but just because I pay 120 quid for alright food which I can eat at 3 or 4 specific meal times doesn't mean that I don't like to make my own curry, or make a lasagne, or biscuits.

I don't mind the block, a 6 by 6 bedroom, a shower shared between 4 or 5 guys, its great fun, but the lack of cooking equipment, or should I say, cooking equipment that is permitted under orders, really gets me.

Combie cookers, slow cookers, george foremans, toastie makers, microwaves - cracking - but go into any house in the world, any flat, any student flat and you will find an oven with hobs. Why is the RAF so f***ed up in this respect.

Are we going to have widespread block fires because, someone doesn't know how to turn off an oven? Would we f***. This daft namby pamby air force that we are in needs to get a grip or I am going to leave.

Cooking and baking is a hobby, and I have recently applied to appear on come dine with me. I am going to have to speak to OC Catering to see if I can use the mess ovens out of hours.

How long have you been in?

If its more than 5 minutes you will have discovered that the RAF and MoD in general will not provide anything unless it really has to, and even then it takes an eternity, with certain exceptions!

Ovens for singlies will not be that high up on anyones agenda when people are living in sub standard accomodation.

If your that bothered move out, or ask to house sit when people go on leave and have a cook fest in their kitchens.

Whats your menu for come dine with me? Pot noodle and toast?

Well, whilst we are in sub standard accomodation, a cooker that would cost a hundred nicker would be a bargain to raise morale. I know I would use it, and so would at least 3 other people I know. "Alright Dave, I'll cook dinner tonight, what do you fancy?" "Don't worry Johnno, I've got some chicken in the fridge"

Perhaps I should get on top of a hangar with a loud speaker.

If they don't agree to put a cooker in the block, I will jump.

See, I don't think I should have to move out of the block just to get a cooker.

Do you really think they're going to let cookers into the rooms? FFS, some p!ssed up singlies have problems cooking toast, never mind chips. Disaster waiting to happen.

You are in the RAF right????

I guess they don't have CO's inspections anymore, certainly wouldn't like to make sure the kitchen was clean enough for the CO's buddy the SWO to look around....!!!!

Maybe you could dig a barbie pit next to the tiki bar behind the block....!!!

In this day of restricted budgets, what is more important, a cooker in the block for someone who already has food to hand, or kit for the guy's in sandy places???
You could alway's remuster to cook. Then you'd be at the ovens all day.

I'm a tad confused. Was it an aerated concrete block in the oven or a normal red house brick.

sounds like the latter to me. FFS mate, if your worried about not being able to cook in the block, why don't you and a few mates go and rent a house. No inspections, no fire alarms, no dodgy mouldy showers. Sounds like a no brainer to me.
