DWR Turnrounds being made even worse....

Rumour has it that only 50% of sgts are available for DWR - hence the short TRT. It doesn't help that there is an FMDL at sgt rank either and if you look at the Personnel Bulletin you'll see that one of the reasons for this is over-promotion. This is an admission of failure and mis-management. Still it does help you to be promoted to WO if you oversee such a debacle.

Talent my @rse.

If thats true then its a shocking state of affairs.

I wonder what percentage of dwr-unfit sgts are celebrating being selected for promotion from the last board?

Rank ranged Posts

Rank ranged Posts

This is my 1st post on E-Goat and although I am not a member of your trade I thought that this would be the best place to get the experts advice. Apologies in advance if I am in the wrong forum.

Would appreciate advice/pointing in the right direction (JSP,AP,QRs etc) regarding the following:

I am a FS in a rank ranged post FS/WO. I serve alongside 4 x WO and we all do the same job. For the last 18 months my Boss has been trying to get me ranked up to WO (UPAR or SPAR) to get over what has been mentioned before in this thread about our Army friends just comparing and treating us like a Staff Sergeant. We are OR7 after all.

During this time I have deployed to HERRICK twice and deploy to TELIC on Monday. (1 -2 month stints). Each time we go around in circles about getting ranked up and I always say the same, if you are going to do it then do it properly and rank me up permanently...therefore I still always deploy as a FS.

He has been very proactive but keeps getting the official reply that it is not possible to deploy someone as a local acting rank to OOA locations.

I have given him a copy of the regualtions but still nothing.

Personally, I feel very let down and dishearted as I feel that the Military are getting away with paying me and treating me as a FS when I am doing the job of a WO (My Boss and the WO's that I work with are great and treat me as one of them). With nearly 30 yrs done I still can't understand why FS in the RAF are not at OR8 level.

Think I may have vented my spleen a bit on here guys but I know on Monday some joker in the COB will call me STAFF !!!!!!

Welcome to the Goat!

This thread is more about people being given acting rank for a 4 month OOA to save those further up the food chain from having to do their fair share at the expense of those below them.

I cannot understand this "rank ranging" for OOA - you should have a specific rank to do a specific job - end of, and if that means the WOs go away every 2-3 years like everyone else, so be it!

In your case if you deploy as a FS to fill one of 5 posts done by 4 x WOs, then imho you should not be deploying to do that job - a WO should.

Nobody should be given plastic rank for an OOA.

I guess you're getting Local Unpaid Acting Rank when you're away? Two answers to your query; firstly try & get the post upgraded to OR 9 (which could mean a posting) or get yourself promoted. May sound harsh but the post is OR7 for a reason so either get your boss to submit an EVF with justification to make it a OR 9 post only and get yourself some Subs Pay or ensure that his SJAR's are spot on and you get the rewards you deserve.

I support your arguement about the OR7/8 scenario but that's been ongoing for some time now and can't see any changes anytime soon.

Thank you for the welcome to the "Goat".

I think I may have put this question on the wrong thread. This is all to do with my rank ranged post at the "Joint" unit that I am on in the UK and not really to do with OOA posts which I think has been well covered already.

I don't get any "local" rank when I deploy away. Just go as a FS. Must mention that 90% of my time is working with the Army so you can understand the difficulty as all they see first is the rank and treat you accordingly!

The 5 posts on the team are established at 2 x OR9 (RN & RAF) 2 x OR8 (ARMY) & 1 x OR7 (RAF) and we all do the same job !!!

I don't want to be rude but if the job is regraded to being a permanent WO post then you will be posted out and a WO posted in. If you are lucky enough to get promoted at the same time good luck to you.

We know what it's like working for the Army, and how much weight they place on rank over the individual, you'll never change them, and the way they send out Acting rank out on OOA makes even more of a mockery of the situation.

If an individual goes OOA with acting unpaid rank and an an incident happens which leads to, for example, medical discharge, guess what rank is in effect for pensions & lump sums etc? Clue: it ain't the higher unpaid rank!

That is why, if there is a requirement for a higher rank, it must always be paid.

No matter where one is serving OOA, there is a greater chance of death or injury than in the UK, whether it's from bullets & bombs, a crap standard of driving by the locals or just by taking more sport/exercise than usual.

I've seen instances in the past where individuals deploying to fill the post of a higher rank were given SPAR. The beauty of this is that the 4 months you spend (as a A/WO for example) count towards seniority when you eventually get promoted to that rank - so only 8 months to jump a pay level etc.
I agree that this shouldn't happen 'at all', but if is has to then everyone should get SPAR for their efforts.

As for the new e-goater FS doing the same job as the WO's.... sounds like the establishment is a bit of a mess in your section!! I'd check your TOR's or something to make sure your not being shafted by the WO's you work with!

Well, I see that (finally!) the turnround times are getting better, but still something doesnt look right:

Sgts - 3 yrs (Using approx 56 per year). Therefore approx 170 used in 3 years.

No of Sgts - A lot more than 170!!!

It might be that 50% of sgts are not available for whatever reason (but mostly MES reasons) so the available manpower pool is not what it should be.

Tommo is right though about FMDLs being set a sgt level being completely wrong and indefensible although the FS that set them is now a WO so maybe there is merit in it after all.

There are screened tours etc but too many are missing the loop due to their MES. Why do we still promote individuals with reduced MES that prevents them from doing OOA's. As promotion is generally quite slow promoting these people is holding the deployable personnel back.
