I believe that the mighty F3 has never fired a missile in actual anger, whether it be yet ANOTHER bl**dy easyjet / ryanair comms loss or E.T. on his way home.....

And as I remember the only non APC launches from The Mighty F4 where a malfunction ground launch of a 'winder at Leuchars, and the UFO Jaguar shootdown at Wildenrath.

That was aimed at an unidentified groundbound barn though! (passed between the old 787 radar and the ILS localiser buildings :) - also got us knocked off early from exersise!

I worked with the man1 on the load team, he said it was definately a "What the F..K!" moment.

Only other ground mishap was the bodge tape engineered Harrier 'winder launch at Stanley unfortunately hitting the UFO guardsmen.

Nick Pope has got so much bum custard coming out of his mouth, its unbelievable.

Ex civil serpant turned failed novelest turned 'British UFO expert'. A sniff of a UFO story and he's out of the woodwork spouting bollocks. Best ignored.

Leuchars sidewinder launch

Leuchars sidewinder launch

From what I remember at the time, we were on 'Q' and 111 were taking over at lunchtime as normal. The aircaft was doing crew-in acceptance checks on the line outside eleventy-first's hangar during a heavy shower. As the armourer doing the sidewinder 'growl' checks went under the a/c from left to right, the missile shot off the rail behind him, hit the concrete pan just before the grass and broke up with the bits going past the radar into the Eden mud. It seems there was a hole in the green line tape around the connection plug to the launcher and a bit of rainwater had seeped through and shorted out +28v from one pin to the missile motor fire pin and so it went whoosh, complete with 'noddy cap'.
In the 9 years I spent on both sqns at Leuchars, I never heard of anything being launched from a 'Q' kite at anything other than a Jindy from Aberporth.
One of our crews did track the private jet that took off from Hamburg and splashed down near Iceland with no crew on board. They flew as close as they dared and took loads of piccies of an empty Learjet with the doors still shut. Could this be the UFO story that this plonker's on about ?????
