Mr Hutton said: "The RAF will continue to have a significant presence in Lincolnshire – and that applies to RAF Scampton.
"I can categorically state there are no plans to close the base."

Yeah, we've all heard quotes like that before.:pDT_Xtremez_42:
So when is it shutting?

The future of a Lincolnshire air base is secure, the Government's Defence Secretary has assured Echo readers.
In an exclusive interview, John Hutton said RAF Scampton will not close once the Red Arrows move and operations are scaled back

Complete load of horse again. It will cost too much to do anything with Scampton, the ASACS Force has already proved that. Once the Sparrows, CRC and 1ACC all move then what is left? Cannot see them keeping all that real estate for MMU!!

The problem with Scampton, is similar to Wittering. If the RAF move out, they have to return the land to the condition in which they found it.

There's no money in the kitty!

What, even removing the dog?

The information I have is that it has to be returned to agricultural land.
When Burtonwood was closed, and I lived at the side of it at the time, it took about four years to rip up the runways/ taxiways etc. It cost a fortune, all paid for by mod.

The rediculas thing was that the land was then sold off for new housing. I bought one of them.

If they hadn't wasted around £10 million working out that the place was full of asbestos then there would be more money to put it back to farmland!

The idea was good originally but the officer (undoubtably now promoted) that came up with the scheme to refurb all the camp without speaking to English Heritage should be made accountable! The daft thing about it is that the ASACS could have moved to Conningsby when the place was being made ready for Typhoo.

True Dave but it's mainly to the north of the M62.
The bulk of it, to the south of the motorway was removed.

M62 runs down what was the main 09-270 runway.

Or the local council could take control of the airfield and make a complete and utter horses arse of it whilst trying to run an airport...............

Wow! Did you hear about this earlier last year then?

The Minister for the Armed Forces (Mr. Bob Ainsworth) 28 Oct 08:
I am able to inform the House today of the outcome of the Royal Air Force study that has been undertaken to consider the future basing requirements of the Air Surveillance and Control System—ASACS—units.

On 10 January 2008, I announced that RAF Boulmer would be retained as the core site for the ASACS Hub but that we needed to do more analysis to determine the optimum basing solution for the remaining ASACS satellite units.

This work has now concluded, and has confirmed that the relocation of the ASACS satellite units to RAF Coningsby is the best option in operational and financial terms. Therefore, I have decided that, subject to TU consultation, the control and reporting centre—CRC—at RAF Scampton and No.1 air control centre—No.1 ACC—at RAF Kirton-in-Lindsey will collocate at RAF Coningsby. The relocation is due to complete by the end of 2014.
