the tests on the day are the same if you want to be a pilot or an adminer if they still use same ones
they are purely a bench mark for checking your mental capability capacity and reaction under a bit of pressure

CLAN test gives you a keyboard with 4 coloured buttons, 4 corner buttons and a numerical keypad. (if they still use it)
simultaneously pressing coloured button when diamonds crossing corresponding backgrounds match
answering simple maths questions via keypad
and matching corresponding corner to word shown up to 2 min earlier

they do the speed and distance ones,
spacial awareness eg picture of cube and then you pick corresponding exploded diagram

IQ style questions

its great :pDT_Xtremez_28:

take a deep breath relax enjoy and just do the best you can

You answered 10 out of 10 questions correctly in a time of 1 minutes 56 seconds.
On average, you answered each question in 11.6 seconds

Not too difficult if you have been practicing. The most important thing to remember on OASC is that the answers are always integers. If you find yourself struggling with decimals or fractions then you have probably started wrong!

Relax, concentrate (it is possible to do both) and during the debrief for the individual and group planning stages take your time, justify your answer, admit your mistakes and then set about correcting them. Often they are looking to push you until you slip up, so don't worry when you do!

Remember also that they are not trying catch you out, there are no hidden agendas, no trick questions; what you are told is the truth, so be honest in return.

Yes they still do Clan test described above. I'm don't think you need an aptitude score for Admin - though you best double check.

However, everybody does aptitude tests regardless of whether they are required for their chosen branch or not. If you are outside the age limits of Pilot/WSO then these extra aptitude tests won't be included, but if you're under 26, you will be required to do the full lot. They take about 4-6 hours.

Keep doing those SDT calculations and you will soon improve.

What type of question are you struggling with:
Working out the Speed, distance or time taken?

If you are going to OASC a good way of practising Speed Time Distance Calculations is on a treadmill (carlos fandango electronic one). Set the clock for 30 mins and then gently increase the speed, trying to work out what distance you will cover at what speed etc etc.

The added benefit is you get fit as well. Of course if you are going Int or Admin Sec the computer test should be just fine ;0)

Learn the shortcuts, ie 90 mph is 1 1 1/2 miles a min. 80 mph is 8 miles every 6 mins. Its just like a times table as a kid.

I practiced whilst driving and worked out all my times or distances it would take me to get to places on road signs or what speed I would have to do to get there in a certain time. I breezed that part of OASC so it obviously worked.

I just took these questions from one of the tests: I’m sure everyone does them differently, so I’m just giving you an idea of what I do in my head, you may find an easier way that works better for you…sorry if these examples are patronizing.

Q1. At 30 mph, how far do you travel in 30 mins?
A: In 1 hour you would travel 30 miles so in half that time you would travel half the distance i.e 15 miles.

Q2. What speed covers 39 miles in 1 hour and 30 mins?
A: 39 divided by 1.5 = 26mph

Q3. At 15 mph, how long does it take to travel 12 miles?
12 miles is 4/5 of 15miles, so will take 4/5 of an hour i.e. 48 mins. (easy if you know your times tables: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60)

Q4. At 16 mph, how long does it take to travel 12 miles?
Again 12miles is ¾ of 16miles, so ¾ of an hour is 45 mins (15, 30, 45, 60 etc)

Q5. At 15 mph, how far do you travel in 32 mins?
At 15mph you’re travelling at 1 mile per 4 mins, so in 32 mins (8 lots of 4 mins) you travel 8 x 1 mile = 8miles.

Q6. At 60 mph, how long does it take to travel 20 miles?
60mph = 1mile per min, so if your travelling for 20mins you would have covered 20 miles or alternatively; 20 miles = 1/3 of 60mph so 1/3 of an hour = 20 mins

Q7. At 14 mph, how long does it take to travel 7 miles?
7 miles is ½ 14mph, so ½ an hour = 30 mins

Q8. At 33 mph, how long does it take to travel 33 miles?
33mph = 33 miles per hour, so you answer is 1 hour

Q9. At 3 mph, how far do you travel in 3 hours and 20 mins?
3mph x 3 hours = 9 miles, then in 20 mins you cover 1 mile, so 9+1 = 10mph

Q10. What speed covers 380 miles in 1 hour and 35 mins?
1h 35 mins is 95 mins. 380/95 = 4. i.e 4 miles per min. So to convert to mph x by 60 (mins in an hour); 4 x 60 = 240mph

Not bad for an old git!

Just keep practicing. You'll soon see a difference. You just need to get your brain in gear for those sort of questions.

6 months ago I made up a little table with various speeds, the time it would take to complete 1 mile at those speeds and the distance I would cover in one minute. I taped one copy to my bathroom mirror and one to my computer monitor at work.

I blitzed through the aptitude tests at OASC.

That website is good for getting you thinking about the type of questions you will face but the numbers used are far more irregular than you really need.

You should send that to Viz, for their Top Tips page.

I did exactly the same thing...In fact once you start calculating everyday stuff it becomes a habit thats hard to kick...especially on long journeys.

Get yourself a Nintendo DS with brain training; great for practicing quick mental calculations.
