Yawnnnn. Mornin! Looks like a Video Map unit off of a DBU system. Seen JAFAD666 set the HT up on this once. He said if you do that without getting a belt you could do the wonky wire game at open days in seconds!!

He's not wrong, that nasty fecker would bite you just for opening the fecking rack.

Even getting the replacement tube out of the fecking box would give you a bite.:pDT_Xtremez_42:

I remeber an instructor asking me to run up a console 64. He'd turned the 250V reference off (I think it was 250V). The HT ran up.... and up.... and up ... and finally arced over to the case with a REAL loud bang every 1/4 second. Very funy indeed..Not!

That or The Type 80, from which that Mercury Arc Rectifier was from. Though if you were really unlucky, you did both.

DBU & C64 - T80 - MK5 display - SSR 750. I don't recall anyone on a DAD course doing AR15 but I'll bow to your superior knowledge on this matter. When I was a lad AR15 was airfield stuff not proper Radar. Hehehehe.

Had a real head and kicked out about 750 kW peak as well, Plus a Mk 8 Display with a real live picture on it, instead of a big Dummy load over the Teabar of 2T. Not all of the AD Fitter/DE courses did Type 80, or even the Mk 5 (some did the Mk 8) during first half of 1985. I can name three courses of the top of my head that did AR-15 2B (DAD's 66, 71 and 76). One member of the middle lot ended up doing Type 80 as well, thanks to failing the exam that TC's in 1T didn't do and got back coursed onto a course which had a large lad from Swaffham on it. Rumour has it that the 2B bit another Goater (as in zapped) from the third course of the three. Course Leader of the first bunch was the guy who caused all the fun we had with SSR750 back then when he told the FS Radar Supervisor in 2(T) the real reason why his course did so badly on their SSR 750 Final Theory Exam.

Erm Yeeees, indeed he did.

I remember the CPL instructor on T80 at the time D*** B*****. Used to take the pi$$ out of me to look cool.... then I aced the exams and only got marked down in the practical for not finding a large piece of w/g which DB had placed, wait for it..... on the w/g!

59 1/2 % on my practical, hadn’t quite grasped the concept of Valve Biasing. However, 1RS didn't do 1/2 percent scores on exams, hence marked up to 60.……A Pass is a Pass, but in this case, a real smooth shave. Anyhow at that point, if by magic, MainJAFAD was now a J/T.

Oh Happy Days. I did a makers' course on Decca Nav in Brixham one good summer. We did the Mk 8 and Mk 10 (with the 9360 computer). Took me ages to ge my head round it (I helped in the local Bar in the evenings). I think I still have mym notes somewheere).

And then on to Canberras (in my case, PR7).

Spider & Spade ? Oh no sweat.

Bloodhound?

And BAC Thunderbird Mk II (Army SAM from the mid 1960's which a lot of people confuse with the Bloodhound, mainly cause it had four boost motors likely the RAF Weapon, though Bloodhound was ramjet, not rocket powered and was a lot bigger). Photo is of a Ferranti Firelight (export model name) Target Illumination Radar (TIR), Developed under the codename of 'Indigo Corkscrew', known by the Army as AA3 Mk 11, and by the RAF as the Radar Type 86. Initially used by the RAF as a mobile kit for deployable Bloodhound Mk 2 operations, with the larger Type 87 being used for fixed site base missile sections, the Type 86 replaced the Type 87 in 1986-88, when we got our hands on ex Swedish Firelights (Swedish Air Force canned Bloodhound in 1978) and ex Army AA3 Mk 11 (Army canned Thunderbird around the same time). Phased out of RAF service with Bloodhound 2 on 1st July 1991.
