Guys,
Serious one here from your friendly Fairy Clown!

Just got this e-mail from a good source (Arts Council liason):

"This is a very serious matter...

In 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery, and starved him to death.

For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.

Does it look like art to you?

But this is not all... the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the 'installation' was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008."

Below is a link for the petition to try and prevent this 'thing' happening again, how do you put this sort of behaviour into words?

Thanks

Chad

Why the hell wasn't he prosecuted?? If I did that to my dog - and it's tempting sometimes - I would have been.

So all those times I got done by the plod (both kinds) for speeding, drunk or whatever I could have got away with it if I had just stated that it was "performance art".

Bollx. Where do I sign.

Petition signed

I started to watch the link Monobrow provided and I had to quit it shortly into the video, I just couldn't watch those images. I'm certainly not sqeamish in viewing film, hell only thing which has ever made me truly cringe was that teeth on the pavement scene in American History X, but that so called art has the cringe factor way off the scale. In total disgust that this has been labelled as art, it's barbaric and if anyone had actually let an animal suffer in such an intentional way they would have been prosecuted for cruelt and banned from having animals. I'm not a fan of what is classed as modern art anyway, but this can not come under the label of art in any form. What would his next artwork entail?

What a complete ignorant bast*rd. It is definitley nothing to do with art.
Petition signed.

Im sorry, but I beg to differ having seen this arguement before when it happened, I once again open myself up to accusations of being a t**t and a C**t for standing up on the side of the artist.
First a couple of points

1. I will never sign this petition I believe people like this exist for a reason.

2. Why if so many people asked the artist to release and feed the dog, why didnt they just do it themselves? One artist a couple of dog lovers you do the maths.

3. How many of you who have already commented done some actuall digging into the subject?

The artist found the dog tied up and abandoned practically dead already, he actually tried feeding the dog and nursing it back to health.

Following quote taken from Guardian arts page
Vargas, 32, said he wanted to test the public's reaction, and insisted none of the exhibition visitors intervened to stop the animal's suffering. He refused to say whether the animal had survived the show, but said he had received dozens of death threats.
Juanita Bermúdez, director of the Códice Gallery, insisted Natividad escaped after just one day. She said: 'It was untied all the time except for the three hours the exhibition lasted and it was fed regularly with dog food Habacuc himself brought in

According to local animal welfare organizations, the dog was in a state of starvation when he was captured from the street for display in the exhibit. We have also been informed that the dog spent one day in the exhibit and later escaped the gallery. We do not condone the actions of this so-called "artist," and condemn the use of live animals in exhibits such as this. An animal welfare organization in Honduras, where the next art show will be held, is keeping close watch on the case and assures us that the artist will not repeat his objectionable exhibit.

He told people visiting, not to feed the dog. He wasnt bothered if they did or didnt. What he wanted to do was provoke a reaction from the public all he provoked was abject hatred towards him in the form of nasty words, a few death threats and an online petition.

As I said before, did anyone try and feed the dog NO did anyone try and release the dog NO

So everybody feel free to call me an insensitive T**T and ignore the actual substance of my post.

I'm not going to call you a tw4t.

But what if I found you dying in the street and tried to feed you but you were too far gone?

Would it be ok if I drag your half dead body on to a stage for all to see?

Even if all that was true (and I doubt it - I suspect the actual truth as always lies somewhere between the two sides of this argument) this "Artist" displayed this suffering amimal in unreasonable way denyng it the slightest dignity in it's final hours. I find that unacceptable as would most of the population of the UK.

Other countries, cultures have different opinions of course the "put another dog on the BBQ" quote nearly stoppped the olympics from happening.....

Comms Lad you are not a Canute but that Artist certainly is.

CommsLad, you make a very good point IMO.
However, I didn't see any mention of a vet, and, one the assumption that the dog was really dying and had refused food, it's bit callous to display the final hours, innit ?

Maybe the petition was what the so-called 'artist' had in mind ? To draw attention to the plight of animals like this ?
I still reckon it's a sick way of doing it.

The highlighted section in red is quite a contrast to a quote used on the petition directive
"According knew the dog died the next day for lack of food. During the inauguration knew that the dog was chased in the afternoon between the houses of aluminum and cardboard for a district of Managua with the name of a saint who could not say that Habakkuk at the time. There were five children of those who helped in the capture, who received bonuses of 10 córdobas comfortable for your cooperation. During the exhibition some people called for the release of the puppy, so that the "artist" was refused. The name of the dog was Natividad, and he was left to die of starvation in the face of all, as if the death of a poor dog was a shameless media show in which nobody does nothing but applaud or look puzzled."

If the "artist" found the dog tied up and close to death himself, why were five children paid to aid in the capture of the dog. If the dog were close to death when found, how could it be chased through the streets?

The exhibit came under the heading "you are what you eat", which is what was spelt out in dog food above the dogs head. If the intention was to raise awareness of the plight of how many dogs are left to roam stray and starving, why not give it a fitting heading to that cause, rather than spelling out " you are what you eat" in dog food above the dogs head.

There are many other ways in which this could have been approached and which would not have had a dog suffer so publicly. The "artist" has used an animal in this way for his own gain.

Going to an extreme, what if the artist decided to have an exhibit of the same title which was to provoke thought and reaction to child starvation. Would it be art to have a malnourished child tied up for public viewing. As I say gone to the extreme, but it would never be allowed even for art if the exhibit were human, yet for a dog it can be named as art.

This isn't art and never should be called art.

didnt this get debunked on one of those "truth or rumour" websites recently.?

Seems like its a factoid to me, nothing actually happened but everyone believed it did so it must be true.

Fiver says this appears on the front page of a red top by monday.
