Basically, Wembley has lost out on a Euro Final because HMG insisted the players involved should pay UK Tax on their salary for that game, regardless of which country the two sides come from.

With the boot on the other foot, if HMG's approach to tax is that you should pay tax in the country you work in on that particular day, why the fcuk do I continue to pay tax when I am overseas? Surely it falls to the Afghan/Iraqi/etc Govt to tax me?

Another shafting, methinks!

So the government gets attacked when they let non-doms off paying tax and when they try to tax the best-paid footballers in the world they get attacked too. They really can't win can they? By losing the Euro final on the principle of taxing income we have lost much more in terms of the injection into our economy from hotels, restaurants, taxis, etc., yet I think the principle is what's important here. My God, I'm sticking up for a Labour government; Seymour will be proud!

As for us paying tax & NI when overseas; I would rather have paid UK taxes than the Belgium equivalent for the 3 years I was there and I would rather have paid NI than need medical care at Yank prices. Don't forget that the Operational Allowance we get when in Iraq and Afghan is more or less a tax refund and while we are away our bins are still being collected, our kids are still going to school and our homes are still being policed.

Damn. I had money on that RemingtonRand would be the first with that response. :pDT_Xtremez_28:

You're right about the police and you could say similar things about our schools and bin collections. But these problems apply to all UK taxpayers and not just us.

It isn't by their choice but the feds have had their hands bound with New Labour red tape.

Round where I live, the county council lobbied the government for more money to fund our police force. The government refused. So the council put another £100 per year on Council Tax which the government has capped so they can't get that money either. Now the council say they have no choice but to cut front-line police operations. Bang goes our community policeman, with the inevitable rise in crime rates to follow (PC Pete does a great job).

I'm not absolving the council from blame - especially in light of the report that many town hall staff across the country earn more than the PM. And I have no doubt that their town-twinning committees, etc., are still well funded, but central government is doing nothing to help.

Well, maybe not quite. You are employed by the UK government (the Queen being probably the only person who can have a military force) and therefore pay taxes on wages, etc..
If you worked for a foreign firm, AND were abroad for a minimum term, you might get to pay tax in the country where you work (and it's a two-edged sword).

I have my Council Tax Bill in front of me now:

Boston Borough Council
Property Band C 2008/2009 Council Tax = £1288.92 (11% increase)

Comprising:

Lincolnshire County Council = £908.24 (3.5% increase)
Lincolnshire Police Authority = £209.20 (78.9% increase)
Boston Borough Council = £148.00 (2.9% increase)

Parish Precept = £23.48

Looks like the Police have made substantial increases to their funds.

AP, I heard on Lincs FM yesterday that the council will have to send out revised bills because the govt have capped the LPA portion of the bill, undermining the £100 increase. LCC's argument is that without the increase or extra funding from central government they will have to cut frontline police services. They have appealed against the cap, so for now it's "wait out".
