Well we are due to be out of our quarter by 1st Feb......it aint gonna happen though as we have nowhere (can't get mortgage) and can't rent anywhere that will accept pets !!) so we will be staying in the quarter for the foreseeable future paying "Violent profits" (thats what they call it up here in scotland)....works out at a very reasonable £470 (ish) per month inc council tax.

I should have been out on the 21st sept! still here though for the next few weeks...after that..who knows. Here is it called damage of trespass.Good luck to you Tashy, as its a bloody minefield trying to find somewhere to live.I also have pets which will have to come with us.

busby, it twas sepaeration and an impending divorce that sees me in the position i am in.

Your MP will be sat in their Ivory Tower without a thought about the people that put him/her where they are.

With the current climate on how the Forces have been treated I feel your local media would have more than an interest in your cases, what have you got to loose. Mum of 4, kids in tow must be right up there in the priority listing. But I suspect ,Tashy man, your pets have no priority and you will need to reconsider your situation. Good luck to you both, I feel you are just the tip of the Iceberg

Hi,

I know what you are saying but we do have 2 kids as well !!

I have no desire to be a burden on the council and WANT to rent privately but if i can't because of set limitations then they will eventually be forced to house us all.

My usual response to this is that people should plan ahead, buy a place themselves or save up for a deposit on their discharge. But then there are people who cannot do this, there are those for whom life just has thrown a fast ball, divorce/separation or medical discharge.

Social housing should be there for people in need, a lot of social housing is occupied by people for life, doleys, chavs, the massed ranks of the long term 'sick' and other people who cannot be bothered to get of the ar5e5 and move their lives forward.

Because of these people the people in real need find themselves on the streets, in hostels or in violent neighbourhoods, if the social housing stock was properly managed (they should stop selling it off for a start) then people who need (not want) a house should be able to get one.

Good luck for all those trying to get housed at the moment, hope the new year brings you some better times.

I agree with busby here, each case should be taken on its merits, there will always be people with genuine needs. But on the flip side there are people I know who have happily lived in Quarters all their lives pi55ing up every penny they earned then at the 21 year point absolutely 5hit themselves. These people should get a grip of they own lives and realise that the cotton blanket will get snatched away eventually.

I completely agree - they have spent every penny, got a big motor on the drive, huge telly etc etc, but nowhere to live post-RAF. The other people mentioned here are exempt from my criticism, because they have unexpected/unforeseen issues. For the others, I have very little sympathy I'm afraid.

The days have gone fella when you automatically got points for being in the Forces. Have you thought about the RBL, RAFA or even SSAFA I still feel these agencies must have some form of clout and will help you out as much as possible. I still feel the media will be a good bargining tool.

I know it will be of no comfort to you right now but for other people reading, It would wise to put your name down on a Council list as soon as you join up, a cost of a stamp and an annual signature will hopefully be a fallback if required. I do beleive you can go on 2 lists 1 for you and 1 for your spouse unless the rules have changed.....

I don't think you understand what Tashy man is saying, he doesn't want a council house, but a place he can rent.

Yeah this is a major concern and just sends the message to possible recruits about how this may affect your life after military life. It just worries me that immigrants have a higher priority for housing than ex forces guys who have fought for there country and served in conditions nobody can ever imagine. This is how they are treated, its no wonder they cannot find anyone to join up these days .

When i escaped, many moons ago, any time that you were paying the RAF accomodation charges was counted as being in council housing and given points accordingly. Don't know whether it's still the same now though.

Luck to you...

Tashy Man, have you tried talking to Clunys? I assume you are in the Elgin area. They put a standard no pets in the lease but are usually willing to talk to the home owners to find out if they will allow pets. It's understandable why most wont though, it doesn't matter how many people have well trained pets if one person has a dog that destroys your house the 400 quid deposit wont pay for much to fix it. I'm afraid I'm a pet owner but wouldn't rent my house to someone with pets for just that reason. My current tenants are going to cost me a lot of time and money when they move out because they've let the garden go wild as it is.

Too little too late??

Too little too late??

Found this on the web this morning:-

The Government is to offer extra help to armed forces personnel to buy their first home or get a council house, housing minister Yvette Cooper has announced.
Shared equity loans are to be extended to the services - boosting the spending power of eligible military families by almost a third.
Under the low-cost housing scheme, personnel who qualify will be able to top up a regular mortgage with a loan provided by the Government and one of four private sector lenders.
Ms Cooper said: "This new support recognises the vital contribution our Armed Forces make to our communities.
"We want to help more key workers, like service personnel, and other first time buyers get a foot on to the housing ladder. That's why we have set out investment of £10.2 billion to provide thousands more affordable and social homes."
Junior defence minister Derek Twigg hailed it as an example of the Government's commitment to the armed forces, following heavy criticism over recent months over their treatment.
"I am delighted that the Government is making it easier for members of the Armed Forces to buy their first home. This is a further demonstration of the Government's ongoing commitment to our service personnel," he said.
The law is also changed to stop them being pushed down the waiting list for local authority accommodation on the basis that they do not have a "local connection" with where they are based or live.
Ms Cooper added: "It is only right that we provide our servicemen and women with the best possible support as they move back to civilian life.
"The service our armed forces give to their country must not place them an any disadvantage when applying for council housing."

Shared equity may be fine for some people but this thread is about people with an urgent and dire need for social housing to cover a short term need. Extra points should me granted to us, we will have paid a fair wack in tax and CILOR so that should help us in some way.

Shared equity allows you to buy the house you want but there are cons so make sure you know what you are doing when you take one out.
