If you could replace the Nelson Mandela statue - who would you replace it with?

A convicted terrorist or a freedom fighter?
Well if you choose to believe the propaganda of an evil apartheid regime that tumbled decades ago after the ruthless oppression of its people then go ahead.

There is no precident for having a British person in the square. Abraham Lincoln, wasn't British.
I'm with the dogfu(ker on this one. Mandela has freely admitted that he and his fellow 'freedom fighters' were guilty of atrocities that violated Human Rights. Not exactly the saint you seem to think he is.

Just because there is a statue of Lincoln is no reason to suggest it's ok to have one for Mandela.

Fortunately you are both in a tiny minority fella.
If someone was brutally oppressing your people would you stand idle and do nothing or would you first try peacefully to challenge it then fight for change?

No there isn't but the point was that there are much more deserving British people who we could have a statue of than Mandela!

I've yet to see many of them posted on this thread. We have a proud heritage of influence and culture in the world, represented in part by the symbolic statues in the square. If we just put up statues of our own countrymen we're just being a bit insular.
There are plenty of statues in London of our past great and good.
Nelson Mandela brought proper representative democracy to South Africa for the first time.

Well let South Africa erect a statue in South Africa.

On the subject of Freedom Fighters and statues in other countries, do you think there is a statue of Boudicea (spelling) in South Africa?

They have, it's in Sandton Square.

Do you think anyone in S Africa knows who she is now or who she was then?

Do you also think she was a terrorist as the Romans probably did?

But that was the original question I was asking - terrorist or freedom fighter. There's only one way to find out, I've added a poll to the original thread http://www.e-goat.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=8968 (I hope you don't mind me using this thread to point to it, Bluntend).

I suggest Goaters do their own research into both Mandela and his wife (try googling Winnie mandela Football club). Then think about other known terrorists.

You know my reply, freedom fighter. Thats also the opinion of the international community, so the question has already been asked and answered fully.
Winnie, his estranged wife, is not being honored, nor should she be. He disassociated himself from her many years ago.
While you are googling type in "apartheid" as part of your research. Then ask the question. "Could I as a member of an indigenous population live under its oppression?"

Ghandi would be a good choice. After all, he believed in non-passive resistance to achieve his aims and was a truly great leader, whereas Mandela was an advocate of violent terrorism. But what's wrong with having a British hero remembered? I can't believe that this country hasn't produced somebody of some worth to remember?

How about one of our great designers like: Sir Frank Whittle, R.J Mitchell, Barnes Wallis or Sir Sydney Camm. They all did their bit to keep us from being German
