Your CIS Group Captain is a wise man.

Until you start missing targets no one is interested. Whilst you are willing to work 12 hour days to get things done no one will appreciate there is a problem. Until you fail you will be LEAN'd even more as to the uninformed it appears you have spare capacity.

Having worked in software myself (as TG2), I appreciate that working with computers can be fun and I've been in the position of working all through the night on several occaisions to ensure an upgrade of software has been carried out without affecting the users. My management didn't realise I hadn't been home when they arrived in the morning and I carried on working to the end of the day.

It's a fact of life that that most computer users log out at 5pm and when they log in the next morning as long as everything still works they are totally oblivious to your efforts.

We are our own worst enemies in that regard. There have been times when - like SLT and others - I have given up whole weekends or worked through the night in order to meet otherwise impossible deadlines. I learned the hard way that nobody appreciates a martyr. If we stopped with the 'can-do' attitude it wouldn't take long for things to come grinding to a halt but it seems to be ingrained into us.

I think the question that needs to be asked is what happens when you don't meet targets on a regular basis, I don't mean which system fails etc. What I mean is this. If you fail to regularlly meet targets are you sure you will highlight a manpower issue and even if this is recognised are you going to get more people? or are you going to play into the government (MOD) hands of lets contract it out as a short term saving?

A smaller scale here - but no less a problem.

We have over 350 users and, by the end end of Sept, we'll have lost:

1xSAC to PVR
1xSAC to promotion
1xSAC to OOA

leaving a grand total of 0 SACs. (PMA won't confirm if we are getting anybody else in.)

We will also be losing 1x SGT to maternity leave at the same time, leaving O Sgts

This leaves the section (to man the help desk and fix faults) down to 2x Cpls (one of whom will be filling in for the SGT)

Therefore we can't plan, book leave or, eventually, fix anything.......

Telling someone to fail to meet their targets is a cheap throwaway line. They know that unless WW3 is breaking out, you will, because of personal pride, meet and exceed targets. If the sh1t did hit the fan, local umbrella sales would rocket! You are right. The Groupie's sentiments were correct but I do think he should be doing more himself to alleviate the problem as it is, rather than create an even bigger one by leaving it to 'the troops'.

I can remember being told to put extra time on the job cards to highlight the work being done to keep the manpower levels up, how times change.
