Its taxable, it is combines with that months wage so is all taxed together... When i got mine i was taking home about £1400 wages and with the bonus after tax that month i got about £3700.

Avoid big tax

Avoid big tax

This month my mate was to due his 7 1/2 bonus, he had applied for it through HR and JPA. To no ones suprise his bonus was not included in his pay, one phone call later to the jprat and he was promised his bonus within two weeks. Amazinly he did get his bonus mid month, thus he was not hit with as much tax as he would if it was included in his monthly wage.

Now not sure how any one else could pull this off, but it could be worth a shot ?

Paying tax on a bonus that you pay for yourself is pretty sh*t in my opinion, but then again we are in the raf so maybe i should not be suprised.

This is just the law of the land unfortunately. The firm I used to work for never paid a Christmas bonus, they gave the staff tesco's vouchers to get around the tax. I'm sure the threshold is much lower than £3K though...

Wouldn't it be nice if the firm we worked for offered us a Christmas bonus...

I don't mean just for being 'in'...More like if you're on OOA then you get something to sweeten the sh*tty deal...Or perhaps excused paying income tax for the seasonal period...

A gesture like that might just make a big difference...

IMO no one in the forces should have to pay tax....FULL STOP!

it's hardly like you guys are a drain on the country are you!!!!

not like the festering low life scum that populates the streets of any town or city in this country....:pDT_Xtremez_25:

added bonus of no tax would be a greater increase in recruitment too!!!! then nobody would ever be shorthanded....

only an idea like.... please do not vote for me at your next general election 'cause i have already ran out of idea's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Off Topic When I was OOA last year I got an extra 20min phone card, which I had to ration between my parents who were in floods of tears at there little girl being 8000 miles away for xmas, Mr Lil Miss Naughty who was just as upset about me being away and the rest of my family!!!! I felt so sorry for the guys who did have kids and had to somehow make the 20mins stretch!!!! We also got a really crap Xmas welfare box. It was full of tat which nobody used!!! I also got a lovely xmas card and box of chocs from the station commander at my parent unit!!!! Off Topic
On the subject of your bonus just thought I would let you know they have apparently changed the rules too. Before when you were paid your bonus you had to stay in for 18mths. If you wanted to come out before the 18Mths was up then you paid back whatever percentage of your bonus was left to work off i.e if you had 6mths of the 18mths left then you paid bk 6mths worth of the bonus. Now though if you leave before the 18mths is up then you have to pay back the whole bonus!!! A bit of a con if you ask me. Glad I got mine before JPA came in!!!!

Excuss my tax ignorance if i'm wrong but he would of been taxed the same amount in total for both payments as he would if it was paid together.

been up for a few hours now so brain is struggling to work it out manually

LMN....You said this before and it still hasn't changed...It's not called a RETENTION BONUS for nothing you know....think yourself lucky if your getting bonuses.....i would put them at 10 and 20 years, not a mamby pamby 3.5, 7.5 or whatever it is these days....I've had longer sh!ts than that !:pDT_Xtremez_09:

I'm no expert on tax so someone feel free to correct me, Don't know how much he would have been taxed percentage wise when the bonus is paid seperately but when it's paid with wages it's my understanding that the following happens. When you add the bonus to a months wages the tax calculator doesn't realise that it's a one off payment and assumes that this is now your salary. Now you're getting an extra £3000 a month it pushes you into the supertax bracket and so you pay higher rate of tax than you normally would for that month. According to inland revenue, what should happen is that when you get paid the next month, things go back to normal and you should pay slightly less tax than normal to offset the extra you paid with you bonus. However I'm a cynic and can't ever imagine the air force getting something like that right especially considering what a farce JPA is. The only way to check you haven't paid to much tax is to check your P60 at the end of the financial year in which you received your bonus.

This has just been published on our RAF Intranet

JPA MID-MONTHLY PAYMENTS

Personnel are to be made aware that if they receive a mid term payment; for whatever reason, that payment will not have tax deducted. However, when the end of the month pay run is activated all transaction for payments and deductions during the monthly period are taken into account. If you receive a mid-monthly payment and you receive more than expected you need to be made aware, that the excess received, will be deducted as tax owed to the Inland Revenue at the end of month pay run.
