The Army had an Army WO first i think so, of course, we had to have one. I think the RN might have 2....

Isn't that the fella who had to exit stage left rather suddenly for providing "comfort" to a squaddie's wife?

This appointment is causing quite a discussion over on Pprune and Arrse.

Just wondering what criteria has to be met for someone to be considered for the post of WO of the RAF. Obviously, holding substantive WO rank will be first and foremost, but what else does the candidate have to have/done in order to meet the spec?

For example, AIUI, for a pilot to join the Reds, they have to be a FJ pilot with operational FJ tours and a minimum number of hours under their belt; truckie and helicopter pilots need not apply.

Space Command all the way. How the hell is he going to relate to anyone who is on the front line and working in conditions which he has never operated under. Ex Army as well which IMHO does not bode well.
Never mind front line, let's start with 'outdoors'.

Edit. Good luck to him though!

None. Have to complete the equivalent of ICSC in the first year I think and get selected at interview.

That was SEAC, post supports tri-service community. Not many people know what it does.

An interesting conundrum - is it better to tell the lords and masters what you believe they want to hear or need to hear?

When I say "better", I dont mean "better for the individual doing the telling".

I had a rose-coloured be-spectacled sqn commander at Wittering who belonged to the "wanted to hear not need to hear" brigade. He didn't like my suggestion of "If you don't like the answer sir, please don't ask the question". My scores took a tumble later that year. Bastid.
