Proffessionally no, socially yes.

Same old people winging about promotion. Same old issues brought up and nothing done about them. Good black tie do with lots of free drinks :)

Professionally, borderline OK - good to hear some bo11ocks rumours quashed and hear things from the horse's mouth even if it's not something we wanted to hear.

'Same old people winging about promotion' - agreed. :( They should do away with the utter time waste of Q&A that gives them a soapbox. Let them winge to Branch Sponsor and desk officer in the bar later.

Socially - well worth it.

Let's hope that next year's doesn't become an obvious party political broadcast and career expo as I suspect it will. :(

Flt OPs Synposium

Flt OPs Synposium

Whilst I agree with most of the sentiments already posted, as yes the actual day itself may have been of dubious (or rather not blatently obvious) use, don't forget that afterwards in the bar can be just as productive if you make it so; and I do not mean in a purely social sense. As they say back in civvy street 'more business is done on the golf course than in the boardroom'.
So, cast the net wide, all Ops Os, all FOMs, all the branch AND trade groups hierachy and as many airships as we can muster - all with a view to getting some direction from up on high and forging ahead with what we, the worker bees, actually want to see happen to 'OUR' branch / trade group.
There are enough of us out there, so instead of saying 'is it worth it', lets say 'lets have a symposium and make it worth it'.
Just my twopenneth, I'll go back to my corner in the bar now.

CheekyMonkey: There was one earlier this year (Flt Ops specialisation invited only) in Mar/Apr time at Shrivenham and another one planned for Cottesmore next year apparently (although I don't know any details).

The Flt Ops Symposiom is no different to any other symposiom held by RAF branches or similar gatherings in civy street. You can not have everybody present, so if TG9 people want to be reprosented than air your views to your Officers, that is what they are there for. One of the big problems, and in fact the reason we went a few years without a symposiom is the lack of accomodation available at camps. If we suddenly get 100 SNCOs turn up no stn could host the event in the first place. View your ideas, concerns and experience to your officers for them to represent you. If you are not getting feed back then ask your officers for it as they were all sent notes from the sympsiom.

For the people who continuely bring up the lack of TG9 input at the birth of the branch, can any of you actually prove TG9 were ignored? I doubt it. More and more people seem happy winging in the crewroom or on Forums like this, but how many people have got of the areses and done something official to air your views and concerns?

I have worked with several TG9 people who have gained commissions and are doing there best for the branch as a whole. On avergage they are no better, or worse than any other Flt Ops Officers in the branch. If any of you think you can do a better job then do it. Either get a comission and sort us out, or use WOTG9 as that is what he is there for.

FF, Sorry to burst your bubble, but there are actually people out there that DON'T want to take a commision, as funny as it may seem. I personally wouldn't lower myself ;)

Right, so I take it we aren't allowed to whinge on forums like this - why not? Its what its bloody here for!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for taking the views to the officers to take to the symposium - again, why the hell should we? It should be open to all who wish to go, not used as some upper class Gin party for the officers so that they can massage each others ego's.

:p :D ;)

So, basically you just want to winge on a forum and do nothing to help the branch? No wonder the trade/branch is in so much trouble.

I can't see the symposion being open to all as mentioned in my previous post. Besides which, it is a very small, almost insignificant part of the Flt ops world. There are many ways to suggest views and concerns on the branch/trade.

I am yet to meet a Flt Ops Officer whoi is not fully aware of the many issues affecting the branch and am suprised you think no one is listening. Put your point of view down on paper and send it to WOTG9, or the branch sponsor and see what happens.

I can asure you there are plenty of people out there working hard to sort the many issues out. These people need support from everyone, but this has to be done properly. There is nothing to stop anyone of any rank addressing issues up the food chain, get it down on paper and get it done.

Mr CM,

Don't sweat it mate, we all know your heart is in the right place and we are all allowed the odd rant now and then.

Surely though there is a way of holding a symposium for all without it costing the earth. Somewhere like Cranwell or Waddo, both have spare capacity in various messes. Surely our "local" representatives can book a station briefing room for a couple of days (over a weekend even!) and we can have an OPS symposium. We could pay serving members rates in the messes and duty meals (if we wear uniform) invite guest speakers etc.

This has been done in the past for PFOM's conferences so why not for a symposium?

By the way, when is the next PFOM's conference then? Or will they go for "invited" guests only again to keep the trouble makers out?

BTW Mr CM were you a JFOM in a tower in 2003 before you got your 3rd and went SW by 20 miles by any chance?

What's the difference between a conference and a symposium?

Conference - Annual meeting of any organization, association, etc. for consultation

Symposium - After-dinner drinking-party with music or conversation

Taken from the Concise Oxford Dictionary. It's true 'onest, look it up yourself. If I have chance to go to one of these, I know which one I'd pick!!

P.S.
The PFOM conference next year may be held at Waddo. TBC

Could each element speak candidly while the other listens on? or would it just end up in a bun fight? I thinks that the seperate conf/symps get to the bottom of issues without outwardly offending the each other, after all we need to work with each other.

However an additional joint meet would be benificial especially for the barman.

Can't we call is "Flight Ops Mania" instead?

Anything ending in "ium" is inherently boring. However anything ending in "ania" must be good!
