I wasn't involved directly in 77, but was called forward for training in Op Scarab Minor in 1980.... 2 days at RAF Catterick, sleeping on the camp beds in the upstairs Airmen's Mess. Never deployed though.

I was listening to some FBU bigwig yesterday and he was complaining about the reduction in the number of fireman, appliances, fire stations, etc and I thought he didn't mention that those reductions may just have been the result of his own members being too good at fire prevention inspections thus reducing the number of fires they had to deal with leading to the reduction in numbers required. Obviously, the BBC weren't thinking the same thing and used the interview as another opportunity to bash the government.

I heard of a few experiences during that '77 strike; one of the funnies was the story of the escorting police car at Locking. The green goddesses were generally accompanied by police cars because the GGs didn't always have 2 tone horns, sometimes only bells so were accompanied by a police car for both noiise and blue lights as well as being 'protection'' against any protestors. At one point, there were 2 GGs & a police car based at Locking, and the police driver decided he needed fuel. The decision was made to give him fuel from the station pumps and he duly refuelled. His high performance 2.something Rover traffic car apparently didn't run too well afterwards on the 3* Civgas that had been dispensed....
