did painter's deploy with squadrons when they were sent aboard on ops like gulf war 1&2 , bosnia, stan ect, or were they always stationed at home bases ? Just wondered what life was like for an painter/finsher in the raf, cheers all

It's one of the main reasons that painters were 'retired' from the RAF a few years ago. Since they had no deployable role, their miltary usefulness in a danger zone was rather limited. They could have done border guarding, but it was decided that it would save a bit of dosh and contract it out to civvies. Of course, it might have been different for previous squabbles of a decade or so ago - there must be a few painters out there who can reveal all.
