When subscribing to a thread, you can choose instant, daily or weekly email notification of replies.
Other forums I use (with the same layout, so I assume the same software) have another option, Delayed. This means if a reply is posted, and you're not on the forum itself, you get an email. But if you are on the forum, it won't. At least that's what I think it does.
Any chance of this being added to e-goat? I find it handy. (Perhaps it's an option you have disabled? Other forums have it, so it must be feasible!)
