39 years ago today I walked through the main gate into RAF Spitalgate, a very naive 17yr old! 15 months later I had to leave the WRAF because my trade had "ceased to exist" due to the Defence cuts & nothing else was available. Luckily 4 months later I was able to re-join & went on to serve until 1979. Very happy times & now having a glass of wine to celebrate the anniversary!

Many congrats Mouse.

So what was the trade that ceased to be and what did you rejoin as?

I once went to a logistics seminar at what was Spitalgate, now an army barracks. It must have been a long walk up that hill back to camp after a night in town, especially after having a few drinks.

I originally joined as a musician in the WRAF Central Band - gave it's last performance at the Albert Hall Festival of Remembrance in 1972 (did a marching display, playing "Hello Dolly" & "Hey look me over"!). All the other bands were for males only in those day so I re-joined as a Telegraphist in 1973 & much preferred being in the "real" air force then!

As for Spitalgate - I was only 17 so not allowed to drink & I can't remember being allowed out in the evenings (other than being bussed to Swinderby for Saturday discos)
