    Air Recruits and Air Specialists

So, (as most people on T V seem to start a sentence…), they have done away with most of the ranks I held, the uniform I had and the aircraft I worked on (except the Puma)… What next, my pension?

    Addressing SACs as "Staff"

Back in the 70’s I knew a Regt SAC whose rank slides. (sans props) read ‘Rock Ape’. No one in authority ever noticed…

    Who has the most medals?

Did my 12 in, not a sniff of a medal; after 2 years as a civvy got one for being in a war… (1st. Gulf War)

For the older codgers amongst us

End of April 76, in Gibson block; I remember the carefully constructed bed pack going out the window...

    What do you still do

Still do the Windsor knot (I wear a uniform in my volunteering role) though with most ties these days it always seems to end up ridiculously short.... Shoes clean, not bulled, iron shirts in the summer when seen, in winter they are under a wooly-pully.

What Happens in Basic Training Today?

I was there in April 76, so much the same experience as Barch. Our Cpl was a cheesed off Irish guy and 'Dixe' Dean was the Sgt. I remember him hooking his pace stick in the back of my webbing belt when I tick-tocked, so I was stationary as the others marched off...

    Return of the DE

I was a 2nd line Mech, did my fitters course and was posted to 3rd line... I arrived at my first 1st line posting as a Cpl. At the 'meet and greet' with the Jengo, he asked me what aircraft experience I had; when I replied 9 weeks on Pumas 7 years before, he walked me to the window and said...

    Who is for a chat

As an air coms guy in the late 70’s/80’s, it was the standard year to SAC, 2 years approx. at second line to my fitters course, the around 3 years at third line to Cpl. Then at my only first line posting they found I had asthma (all that soldering I had done?) and I got medically downgraded...

    What was the place...

GST2 did theirs on the camp when I did GST1. At the end of our trip to Banana Junction we found the hot water in the block ran out very quickly, so we used the showers in the next block. Walking back one of our number dressed in only smallish towel was challenged by a female Cpl on her exercise...

    Best Skive?

Nose gunner’s compartment of a Shack MR2 at Cosford while doing my fitters course, can’t be seen from the ground... Especially good after lunch.

What inspired you to join the Royal Air Force?

Arrived back in the UK after doing the overland bit to India and Nepal back in the 70's. Met my future wife and realised there was no prospects for a cartographic draughtsman where I lived. My prospective father-in-law was a 23 year ex-Navy man, my Dad had been in the Army, so I figured the...

    What was the place...

I was there in 84 I think it was, November, perishing, raining, miserable... Along with 'Dutch' Holland I got Hyperthermia from standing in a trench that slowly filled with water. We were put in a hut and ordered to make tea using those ration pack solid fuel stoves.. After a while we felt a bit...
