Just an idea at the minute but it makes financial sense, however, it will not help the economy or Moray and if they were to do the same to Marham then that's more communities ruined, and it places a huge burden on Harriers (however you could post all the manpower to harrier Sqns so that its not the same people doing 4 months in Kandahar every 18 months.

A better idea would be to bin ALL F3s, today, and just get a typhoon det going at Leuchars until the Sqns form in a few months.

The times article implies that "ALL TORNADOS" would be canned, F3s and GRs from all camps

Tip top idea, shame the mighty Tranche 2 Bafoon is not quite capable of filling the current F3 role at Leuchars Flying Club

Should this ever happen, what are they going to do with all those personnel. Yes I know they will be part of this suggested 7000, but that is a lot of people and aircraft. I spent a couple of years at Cottesmore the Harrier is on it's last legs it's an airframe from the 60's yes it's been upgraded to GR9 standard but they only have a few gr9's as the rest will be a mix of 7's and 7a's as the contract only allowed foir a certain no of 9's. And one of the reason's why the tonka's took over coz of the maintaince issues with the 9's. As they only had a few and had to hve so many in theatre and then the rest were used for pilot training before deploying at Cott. They wern't getting a chance to stagger the hours so to have a proper rotation system, Trust me I know, I was in Eng OPs for my stint.:raf:

Aren't all the fleet GR9 or T12 now? We would probably struggle with the 'a' bit as we don't have loads of the new engines, but with the reduction in the fleet I'd assume we'd have enough to man KAF (or maybe Bastion) with GR9a, if we stop letting the Navy work on them.

First flight of the Harrier 2 airframe was in the early 80's and the last time I looked (Our Sqn stacker has a list of the fleet + INV codes) we only have 2 GR7's left which are to be included in the program (8 Aircraft?) for breaking down into spares to keep the others flying. T12's will not be affected at the moment.....apparently.

I think there are two or three 7's in HMF that have been pulled off the upgrade line (in December) and are still awaiting their fate. I was also told the BAE at Brough have already made new frame 29's (I think it is) to extend the airframe life at a later date.

Frankly, the plight of Moray will be the least of the Govt's concerns. They return a raving nationalist to Westminster every election with a large majority, and are a pretty anti-english bunch on the whole.

Frankly, you're speaking a load of rubbish, on the whole. I'm English and have lived in Moray for the past 12 years, bar a god awful tour of 18 months in Norfolk. The people in Moray are a good bunch and with the exception of the very rare occasion you meet a drunken ned on a Saturday night, they are very welcoming to all.

I'll second that, I enjoyed 13 years living in Elgin and found the folks very welcoming.

I beg to differ.

I spent the majority of my teenage upbringing in Moray particularly in Archiestown (Situated approx 20miles from Elgin) and Forres. Put it this way, I learnt the hard way in how to look after myself.

I've never known a more Anti-English bunch than that lot in Archiestown. Forres was however only slightly different due to the influx of Scaley brats and their families from Kinloss.

Sorry! I'm rather confused; it may be because of my advancing years. According to some sources that I have read the government found 250 billion to prop up the banks but can't afford 38 billion a year to defend our septic, sorry I meant sceptred, isle. Now they want to take loads of money out of the defence budget by grounding most of our offensive/recon capability. In the great scheme of life the defence budget strikes me as being a relatively small sum of money. I always thought that the first role of any government was the safety of its citizens, or subjects in this case. I also fail to see the economic sense in wrecking the economies of two fairly isolated communities. Oh I am so confused today………sorry !! :pDT_Xtremez_21:

Lucky you living in such a welcoming community. Obviusly having the back end of my car smashed up by my neighbour because I was a "FEB", followed up by ABH when I went to remonstrate with him was clearly a figment of my imagination. As was the £300 fine the Sherrif's Court imposed and £200 compensation that I received.

As far as I am concerned the whole of Moray can lose its biggest employer and I wont shed a tear, and if Mr Salmon wants it to flourish then he can use his tax-raising powers to help pay for it.

Oh Snowball! Now I'm really confused. Traditionally the blue side have been for defence and the red side against it. Now we are being funked over the barrel again by our supposed friends. Time to leave me thinks. Now where did I put my passport ??

We were screwed no matter who got in. Difference is Labour promised us lots of shiney new kit the country can't afford and the Tories have been honest(ish) about it being unaffordable and have to sh1t can a lot of it. Foreign aid and our standing in the EU is more important than home defence in the eyes of politicians.

Sorry to hear that... But you shouldn't tar the whole of Moray down to the actions of one knob, you get them everywhere.

I have to agree with Mutty, my wife found it particularly difficult to get a job up there, with one potential employer telling her it was because she was English and I was in the RAF that she wouldn't get the job. I'll be sorry to see either camp go as I have a house up there that I've been wanting to sell but as the RAF can't seem to keep me in one part of the Country for more than 2 years at a time nowadays I've been renting it out until I can settle somewhere.
I have to say that my opinion of most people in the North of Scotland is pretty poor, with the Aberdonians a close second to those in Moray for the title of "Bigots of the Realm". I'd much rather they built a wall just about level with Perth and left all the inbreds up there to their own devices, and I'm Scottish and proud to be so.
