Hi - I passed the aptitude tests last year but failed interview because I was nervous! Was advised to try again in 6 months but during that time the 2 jobs I was interested in were over-subscribed. Having spoken to the local RAF careers office, they suggested I registered myself so that I would be informed when the jobs became available again. I have discovered that there are a few vacancies but they are already in the process of interviewing other candidates and that I had missed the opportunity of being interviewed again. What is the point in registering if nobody contacts you to let you know that there are vacancies available? Should I re-register and, if so, how? Please help - I am really keen to join the RAF and having taken steps to improve confidence. Many thanks .....

If your already registered with the CIL (Careers Information Line) then you just have to sit and wait it out.

First off have a couple of email accounts set up as I couldn't get any through Fsmail.net but I did through Yahoo.com

Check your emails everyday as the required manpower for the majority of trades fluctuates regularly. When you get that email reply asap as it's fastest finger first.

From then on in if you satisfy the criteria set by the Virtual AFCO, the real AFCO will guide you from then on in.

Best of luck.

Few years back when I was in my first go at applying I clearly remember the recruitment office saying not to bother registering and to just ring them every week or two to check if it's available. Not only is it the best way to make sure it's available or not but it shows the recruitment team that you are eager and keen.

The whole process has changed in that few years I'm afraid, the first reply is the one to follow.

There is nothing as persuasive as illustrative relevant experience. It always impresses the Interview panel (Believe me - I did a stint on the Board at Biggen OASC).

So mount an attack on your local recruiting office. Capture the people there and hold them, preferably naked and tied to the radiators with a bag over their heads. Them, not you.

Military skills, you see.

Then, as you wannabee an ATC wallah, use a megaphone to direct traffic in the street outside. Using approved phrases like 'Bus no 17, for ident, turn left thirty degrees', or ' Ford Escort CH 432T, taxi to the zebra crossing and hold', would get extra smarty points.

Phone the cafe next door and demand a standard Nato cuppa.

I fear you may be shot, but what a great idea!

But make sure you use your phonetic alphabet for extra effect. Nothing like a Whiskey and a Charlie to impress the recruiters...on second thoughts...:0
