Whislt I was sat in my 4 man room, sheltering from incoming rockets in Afghanistan. I had a little weep for you poor lot stuck down south.

last time in afghan, i got to see my family whilst on r&r, this time i wont get to see them. so yes whilst it is safer down there, it is not nicer. And no, before anyone suggests it, they cant come visit me as i wouldnt wish the long flight upon either my children (one of whom is a baby) or my husband.

And then got on your wifi and looked for what you can spend your £1000s of pounds of OP Allowance on?

I've not done MPA but being up a mountain is no fun....wish we had a burger king/ coffee shop there.....

Au contraire mon ami, I have done 5 runs there now and volunteered for the mountain sites each time. Far better than MPA!

Mind you, with the new manning coming in, that may change!

Certainly will change, no bar, no chefs and sleeping in the TRES, no more fun on the mountain sites. Shame as I used to enjoy 4 months playing at being a singley.

No wifi when minimise is on. Thats when someone gets killed (Which happens alot) in the little war thats going on. I'm fairly sure their Op allowance is not much good to them. Still could be worse, I could be stuck in a single room having to go on the pi$$ every night.

Why the comparison between MPC and Afghan, most people don't get the choice where they go, not to mention that most people who have done a few years will have been to MPC and the Gulf anyway.

Once again, this is not a contest about which location is more nails, it's more for ascertaining what the state of the accommadation is like at MPA these days.

If you want to have a pop about who is harder by going where, start it in fight club.

I had to share a hotel room in Arizona once, and we ate a 48 inch pizza between us. :pDT_Xtremez_14:

Well said.

The OP said we've got "this" now and it's going to "that". He thinks it's rubbish (and so do I, to be honest).

I don't think he asked if anyone has got it any worse! It goes without saying that the closer to the frontline, the more austere the conditions. Respect to you guys currently serving somewhere far away and uncomfortable - really - but the "You think you've got it bad" comments don't really add useful content to the thread.

My most humble opinion.

Yorkie,

was down MPA when the movearound (is that a real word?) went on. The OP's post was a bit tabloid, but ye, the guys in Uniform did get moved out of single man rooms - as a SNEC we just got moved to a different small single man room. However, they were 2 to a 4-man room up at 12 Fac, separated them into separate areas and had more room than the SNECs did. Plus they liked the more social side to life where they actually saw someone (except in the gym or bar) outside of work hours - no shifts for us I'm afraid. Quality of life better in their view.

From a reality perspective it would be good if the OP came back on to the thread and said how the movearound affected him

enough room?

enough room?

If there is enough space to give everyone their own room then do it. If they think that saving a few pennies on heating or they can stop maintaining them then weigh it up against getting them damp/ mould free if they need the accomodation in the future.

Surely we should give EVERYONE the best support we can.

If it was up to me everyone would have their own room and we wouldn't be in afganistan.

Back in the day all 38 Fac had was 2 man rooms.
I had to share mine with a sailor.
It was hell, he snored.

Comm's trades were the only RAF/RN in 38, the rest were all Grunts. It was all a bit Fort Apache.

We'd pass through the RAF in 12 Fac on the way to work, it all seemed very shiny but the presence of a SWO was enough to send us scurrying back to our home in Gruntland.

The mountains were worse off, 303SU were still living in trenches and containers but 7SU had stuck all their containers together to make a big super container. Single rooms - but no windows unless you were on the outside wall.

It was a vast improvement on the year before though.... those lads lived on boats.

This adds nothing to the thread (other than promoting how hard core we all were) but I haven't posted anything for a while and the EGoat keeps telling me I should. :pDT_Xtremez_30:

Absolutely agree there, why oh why are we the only organization that actively seeks to make it as unpleasant as possible when it comes to living conditions? I understand fully that in KAF and other areas over there there is a severe shortage of accommodation and accept 'quadrupling-up' as a necessity but the Falklands? There is always some monkey who believes that listening to someone snore all night is healthy character building.

Most of the heating can't be isolated properly down there adequately to save a decent amount of money anyway.
Plus the last fire officer circa Spring 2010 told OC BIFSAI to fek off as he wanted to bunk up accomodation to save money and it was contrary to fire safety obligations.
All wood accomodation burns like a fekker.
