I have heard a rumour that Brize re-opened today and that the RHAG that has been fitted is only cleared to be trampled by Tornado.

ie, of all the fixed-wing ac in the RAF Inventory, only Tornado is cleared to trample the Brize RHAG.

So not VC10, C-17 and Tristar then? :pDT_Xtremez_21:

Good job that VC10, Tristar and C17s dont have arrestor hooks then.

The key to not making yourself sound ill-informed here JF is to understand 'trample'...

by trample, I mean wheels roll over the cable - so GEF would possibly have to de-rig the RHAG each time any aircraft other than a Tornado uses Brize runway.

Which isn't helpful at a non-tornado base.

What is the reason for installing the RHAG at brize?

A good question 'shron. Presumably RHAG is for emergency divert of fast-jets with brake problems

Bzn is part for the Extended Hours Airdrome, which effectively means that an aircraft with any type of problem can divert to them.

So I would assume that they have a RHAG fited to aid such aircraft in an emergency.

Of course the Rhags would be De-Rigged, that is layed out along 1 side of the runway and when needed it would be Rigged for use. This takes approx 15-20mins to drag it across the runway and get it rigged for use.

you sound well-informed.

Brize never used to have a RHAG fitted. I also believe the new one is installed in a kind of 'trench' across the runway and is 'raised' (not rigged) automatically.

Is this type quite so easy to rig and de-rig as you suggest?

Hmm, could make life pretty sporting for the guys from GEF if you've got a Jag 5 mins out with hyd or engine problems (hardly rare).

Blunty - has the excrement hit the aerodynamic cooling apparatus in your office on this subject yet?

certainly a topic of concern here! :pDT_Xtremez_42:

If the RHAG is in the down position it can be trampled by other aircraft.

Standards!

I don't think its likely to. I hear the runway lights are still out though...
