I did read something in the newspaper (before the election) about tory plans to cut MOD by 25%. 25% of what I don't know. My guess is a few aircraft, a ship or 2, and lots of bods. Redundancy anyone??!

Public sector = paycut. The new government have laid down a marker with their paycut, watch this space for a minimum 5% cut across the board. If you don't like it - you can walk.... that will be the attitude.

Sure. Pre-election there was no danger of armed forces not getting an April pay rise, as they didn't want to risk upsetting us/familes/supporters etc. Now that they're in for 4/5 years they can p off whoever they want!

Paycut by 5% wouold be harsh, but if necessary...acceptable for a short while.

The question is what would happen to our military pensions as they based on salary? You can bet the govt. would cut those too.

Did he mean merging us with the army was an easy thing to do or an easy statement to make?

Are they based on salary, as I believed that it was based on rank and lenghth of time.

Looks like FSTA maybe under review!

"Particularly as far as fast jets are concerned, a number of contracts need to be looked at, one of which is the air-to-air refuelling contract which was a shameful one, a very, very expensive one, two years ago."

At £15BN it would be easier to buy our own aircraft and not worry about the licensing issue!

Dannat is Army

Dannat is Army

I think it's nice for him to start by accepting that tanks are as irrelevant as supersonic jets on the insurget filled battle field.

I think he has bigger ideas for the Navy, and I still cannot see those new carriers (and the F 35s on board) steaming into Portsmouth.

Replacement for the tornado? do we need something cutting edge to provide the kind of support we will be expecting to do for the next few years.

There acres of waste in the Military that should be thinned out, Star Ranking Officers in all three services, the requirement to have very differently organised support services in each service are probably a couple of areas where a few billion could be saved here and there.

If AT does get cut, can't see the VC10's lasting much longer, let alone the tristars before they manage to get a replacement system in..... Far far too much money spent on it already.

Not to mention the amount of british jobs at all levels tied up with it. If they cut that, they will be putting loads of people out of work...

Same old tories eh?

I do not know what is in the contract with Air Tanker but I am sure there will be some escape clause, however the aircraft are already ordered and in production, so just buy them and fill the Sqn with service personnel. Short term expense for long term gain. No need for all the JAR training and no retention issue. And I can have the job as WO Eng!

I work within Fwd Support. First time I've done a job like this and it has amazed me how much "waste" there is behind the scenes that doesn't really contribute to keeping aircraft in the air.
I reckon you cut the posts by 50% easily. That's just here at our secret airbase. It seems we've spent so long trying to keep jobs and posts open, we've almost lost sight of what Fwd Support actually means.

The names of sections have changed so many times, I no longer know who is called what. Can't we go back to how it was? Why do we need Wg Cdr Depth, Wg Cdr Fwd, Wg Cdr Logs? They used to be one person-OC Eng!

There's plenty of scope to make realistic cuts, we all know where they should be made. But will the norm happen, will the coal face get chopped again?

DE&S are worried about this. In preparation of an SDR and pressure on procurement in general they are implementing a flexible resourcing where staff that have capacity (including military) can be swapped between roles, while occupying the same desk. I for one am happy about this. Getting experience across different teams would be interesting and good for the CV. Some of my civilian colleagues aren’t keen and wary of the 'law of unintended consequences' where the data captured can be used as a means of identifying slackers...or should I say slack posts. The big message is more outputs with the same, rather the same outputs with less.
