Nothing cryptic really, dont know if you can see the youtube link but its a news article about some air traffic controllers who have just been busted at JFK for letting their kids have a go at directing aircraft.

yup Read that in Metro this morning on the way into work, it seems that an ATC took his kid into work and between him and his colleague they let him talk to the planes on the ground.

Storm in a tea cup. The child sounded professional in saying what Daddy had obviously told him to say and the pilots didn't seem upset. There was no risk to passengers, it's been blown out of proprtion by some bloody killjoy. As per bloody usual !

Our morning radio show had something about this today. Evidently the ATC and his supervisor have been suspended with the very real possibility of firing. From what I gather it was just one ATC who brought in his son. They were saying that the kid wasn't "running around" and was under his father supervision. The upshot was that as it "hit" the news then actions have to be seen to be taken. Looks like another thing that is blown way out of proportion by the internet and journos looking for news.

I'd rather the lad run-around the tower than direct on the radio. I for one say that its inappropriate for a child to be on the radio and evidently the employer agrees. Goodness knows how many regs have been broken during this event.

Although nowhere near the same magnitude in terms of effect, anyone remember the Aeroflot Flight 593 crash in '94. A 15 year old on the controls of an A-310, no doubt his dad thought "ahhh it'll be alright". I say, dont fcuk around with flight safety.

I for one wondered about the pilots attitudes, carrying on as normal when quite clearly they were being spoken to by a child. Surely a professional pilot would question that, unless they were fore warned

One did say something along the lines of "I wish I could bring my kid to work".
He was talking to ground traffic only, so where's the problem ? He wasn't messing about, he was delivering the instructions clearly and precisely. If the ****** with the scanner hadn't seen an opportunity for a "quick buck" by selling the story, no-one would care. If the pilots had objected I would say fair enough, but they didn't. That kid might have made a good controller one day!

Big fuss about nothing, the kid was being supervised, the pilot at any point could have said that he wanted an adult. The kid was sensible, and how many times do ATC cadets get to do things.

We let them fly the planes :pDT_Xtremez_09:

ive had my lad in the left hand seat in lightning t5 doing anti det runs over xmas shut down.i set it all up, he hits the start tit i get the donk to idle same again for no2.he then advances the throttles to 60%.now we can play with things like flaps, air brakes, canopy etct he loved it. only 12 at the time but it stuck with him and now hes a sooty as well.so good things can come from taking your kids to work, just keep an eye on them and thay love it.

Fair doos good on the kid but what you have to think about is the

"What if"

side of things.

Imagine that plane had come down and had an accident, can't blame the lil kiddie controlling it.

Imagine it was one of your loved one that heaven forbid was on the plane if it had of crashed!

It couldn't really have come down any further than already on the ground though could it? I suppose if the undercarriage had retracted.:pDT_Xtremez_42:

U/C will not retract on the ground, or shouldn't if the W.O.G. switches are working correctly............orwhatever they call them in this pc world of today! :pDT_Xtremez_14:

W.O.W switch (weight on wheels) is the PC term we use nowadays.

Normally works by using a selector baulk (a cam that prevents inadvertent operation of the handle).

However most aircraft have an over-ride switch in case the pilot wants to collapse the undercarriage.... can't think why?
