Just a quick one. I recall overhearing a conversation with DATO a while back where it was mentioned that there is a 5 digit number that you can dial before the extension to get straight through to a Military landline without having to dial the civvy number and extention. Does anyone know what this number is? Or is it Camp specific?

And before anyone says it, yes I have tried asking DATO however the person I overheard is off indefinately and the remaining staff have no idea.

When I was at a certain training camp a few years ago, I used to be able to dial the local 5 digit dialling code, then the numbers 65 followed by the 4 digit extension. It only worked for that particular unit though. I don't know how to do it at the unit I'm at now, I have also asked the DATO and they dont know either. It is possible though.

It is camp specific and some camps don't have the ability. Leuchars does for instance and I have a feeling that Odiham now does but it is a relatively recent thing. I would guess that if your comms people don't know it at your camp it's probably because you don't have the facility.

Well Sniffer all you need is the local dialling code and the extension you want and their are one hundred possibilities for the other two numbers. I think you would be unlucky if you got ninety nine wrong ones before getting it right, and it is a Service phone, give it a go :pDT_Xtremez_42:

How about looking for some correspondance from the relevant camp and it should have the number on there. If it helps Lossie's is 81 followed by the ext, Coningsby's is 34.

Why dont you just dial the number of a camp you know... get put through to the operator and ask for the extension you want at the right camp?

We recently had quite a serious incident on camp, in which a civilian died. Unfortunately due to the $hite radios the medics have, they had to rely upon the duty mobiles to relay info to the Med Centre. One of the items identified from this was the time involved in calling the civvy number first, going through the switch board then putting in the Med Cen ext numbers, only for it to be engaged etc etc.

I had heard about being able to put a prefix which I have now found to be 9532 then the ext number and it puts you straight through to that number without having to go through the main switch board. These numbers can be saved directly in each mobile. Which would make both the Docs and the Duty Medics life easier. It is also apparently cheaper than making a call to a landline.

Sadly in this situation it is unlikely to have made much difference to the chap involved but you never know what may happen next.

Hi, what you're referring to is DFTS Dial code. This system allows you (from a military line) to call another military line directly using the station dial code, followed by the extension you need; It will look something like this: 95991 6799, the latter 4 digits being the extension.

Id dialling from a PSTN phone then dropping the last 4 digits of the camps number and replacing them with the extension usually works.

e.g (not real) camp and you want ext 3333: 01442 123123 (would get the camp automated service asking you to dial extension)

you can dial 01442 123333 and get straight through to the extension.

This method does not work at all camps.

I have clearly not had enough postings because I assumed all camps had this facility.

Odd that they don't, seems like a simple enough system.

Your DATO is useless. Tell them to contact the CASC for the info. The CASC are on 0800 389 2272. They deal with all BT faults, number swaps etc. DATO is a middle man (or woman) for authorisation, but all info on PW's, level of service per PW and access codes can be found from CASC.

Hope this helps.

p.s. our DATO is brilliant, certainly know her stuff.
