What's the deal with PODL?

I'm a shift worker and have been told we have to take our PODL as a day worker when arriving back from theatre, some lads have been away for 12 weeks and on this basis will potentially only get the same amount of time off as someone who's done 8 weeks.. Is this right/fair?

Also how long do we get to take PODL, I understand it to be 6 months, but apparantly Lyneham policy say's we have to take it straight away, I had leave left over the 15 days for this leave period and wanted to take that first so I don't lose it, but have been told i've got to sacrifice them and take my PODL first...

Seems like Lyneham have their own rules regarding PODL...

Anyone shed any light on this??

Way I understand it is that it's 1 day for every 9 you spend OOA, shifts are irrelevant (I think). I'm sure one of our finest TG 17 peeps will be along with the official blurb. It might work differently? at Lyneham as you're always fecking away, I don't know. As for the leave over 15 days faff, didn't you think of managing it better?:pDT_Xtremez_19:

Like R78 says, 1 day PODL for every 9 days away. PODL should be taken within your first month back from Ops providing the overriding Op tempo allows this. If you have 15 days ILA to carry over you can still do this especially as you have been away and unable to take it in the leave year it was issued.

8 weeks will be about 6 days and 12 weeks will be about 9 days. give or take.
yes to be taken straight away (thats the idea of the leave!)
Just shows how the manage leave policy will be difficult for us.
i have been caught out before, save a bit of leave and then find myself detatched, or use leave up before a det only to get the det delayed leaving me with no leave!
All these times a chat with local management has sorted it out but now there are these new laws who knows!

You're not a shift worker

You're not a shift worker

You won't be classed as a shift worker until you are back on shift, and this won't be until you start work again so you will take your leave just like a daisy. PODL is a welfare thing to help you re-establish yourself when you get back so should be taken asap on return, Lynehams policy isn't far off best practice as it stops line managers dragging people in, obviously in your case you'd prefer this.

With regards your extra leave, I would guess if you've been detached then you've got a strong arguement to carry forward the extra.

Your moans, whilst meaningful to you, are not really relevant, shift workers generally do very well out of the leave system, which is probably why you're moaning about this bit, and as you're not really missing out get on with it.

Of course it is fair. Fair to every serving member of the RAF. Working days are classed as Monday to Friday which is the days you will use your POL over not just the days when you are on shift no matter how much you dont like it....... and yes I work shift!

Dont go down that route chum, thats a whole new thread.

Usually at Lyneham a chat with your snec beore you return will sort it out and an arrangement for fair usage for your PODL was sorted out but since the merge some shifts seem to have spineless/useless snec's who wont look after thier lads so my guess is as good as yours. Still worth a chat though, there are still some good snecs about.

Make sure you have a break in between PODL and ILA or you will still be classed as a day worker for your leave.

Nice one, thanks for the replies, I've been away a lot this year on courses I couldn't get out of, that's why i've got loads of leave left, so i wasn't able to manage it much better to be honest...

I'll have a chat, and see what gets said, our snecs are very good to be fair, it's just that it's not really up to them, it's the fs/boss who make the decision on leave...

Thanks again to everyone that replied...

Work!!, I'll have you know the lads are working their bolox off. I consider myself to be an amazing snec. I treat the lads that I work with like my sons. You sound to me like the snivvely kid at school who always got picked last at football. You'd better give me your dinner money or I'll snap your glasses.
