Hi all new to the forum taking in everything that has been said so far!! Some awesome advice from some seasoned Vets.

Do the working hours remain the same across all trades, ie 12 hr days with an hours commute each way?

Or is there shift work out there?

I am a TG4 Tech Cpl just enquiring as my App for this year is in

That is typical of the Royal Air Force, give up the techie slots before any aircrew lose. How can we expect for them to give up their posts and allowances when techies always suffer. That is a whole different story though.

Taffeast,

Well informed post there mate. Do you see many RAF articles on it? As for the hours worked, until you do it regularly then you have no idea fella.

It is the location that ****es you off and causes your bitterness.

It is actually cheers! I've read many an article this year...take a look at past issues of the RAF news (one example of many) and you will too. As for the location, i'm already on an overseas post so i'm not bitter in the least.

The point on the hours is how someone can have the nerve to moan about a 12 hour shift when guys are 'stood to' 24/7 for six month+ straight. Many people are and have pushed long hours for extended periods of time without needing a pat on the back.

You can't really winge about your lot when your in vegas....next thing you know you'll all be expecting a medal when your boots haven't even touched the ground!

On a seperate note - if your wife is close to her family than this can cause real issues on an oversea's posting.

I'm sure Sir Salty or Billy Boy will correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that the guys out there spend 4 months in every 12 in the much less flashy and glamorous variety of desert doing equally long shifts (if not more). If there's any truth in some of the other stuff I've heard it's far from being one big party.

The shifts are long and they are on a 6/3 cycle. This is nothing to do with what the guys in the stan are doing on the ground. You are not comparing bananas with bananas, we are in direct support of Op Herrick 24/7, and the input given from here is indispensible. Go and ask on ARRSE.

As for a pat on the back, we are not asking for one. In fact you will find very very few people who gloat about what they do and the fact that it is Vegas.

If you really want to be picky, we work 50 miles from Vegas, so realistically we spend a lot more time away from Vegas than we do there.

Hope that helps.

I would have still loved an opportunity to be there. My mrs aint looking forward to the journey every day either and now the admin staff give 24 hour cover. We have a 13 year old going out there too.

Who is moaning about shifts by the way? I have not seen any one do it. You are the one that brought it up

career break

career break

I am considering a career break in the last year of her tour, all depends on the money situation. What are the chances of getting a job as a fairy out there?

If it is going to be such a hardship why did she accept the post??? If she is going out there as a single mum working 12 hour shifts then that surely is going to be at the detriment to your daughter???
