No

No

No it is totally revamped every 4/5 yrs i think.
The rate is updated every year as far as cost of shopping goes.
But the type of stuff it covers is only done every 4 yrs I think.
Apparently most of it is there to cover the cost of having to sell your car before you go away and then buying it back when you come home.
Doesn't include cost of internet, telephone calls, fuel bills etc.

The LOA Review Team (best job on the planet) travel the world each year comparing the costs of a typical shopping basket (bread, milk, that kind of thing) with the UK average. They also consider things like car insurance, telephone bills, eating out and costs of babysitters/childminders.

They also do a major review every 5 years which looks at lifestyle changes. There was a global reduction in LOA from October 2005 which was mainly due to the fact that we (allegedly) spend less on babysitters now than we used to.

Seriously?! Babysitters!! We had a 'circle' going when i was out there that used tokens. I thought the rates had gone down a fair bit, but that seems a trifle ridiculous!:pDT_Xtremez_35:

Domestic assistance

Domestic assistance

There was a bit of fuss about DOMESTIC ASSISTANCE in Cyprus, a while ago.
The officers get extra LOA cos they employ someone to look after kids and clean QTR while the wives drink tea and pimms. So the costs are added to LOA? Cos they need all that extra cash don't they....

The Juniors who could do with some help as the wives need to top up hubbys wages, dont get it cos they dont employ them.
But if they got the allowance they could afford to. Chicken and egg if you ask me.

I always thought the idea of LOA is to go towards extra costs of being overseas..
The officers wives don't have a slave in the UK so why do they need extra money to pay for one overseas, where they are cheaper to employ???

I think they compare the NAAFI and local shop prices with that of a waitrose in Salisbury(?) I think. I'm sure if they compared it to Tesco and Iceland in the UK LOA would shoot up.

It was all to do with a UK lifestyle study that was carried out a few years ago. According to the report we now get babysitters in for an average of something like 7 hours a month which is a lot less than it used to be. My argument was that I would use babysitters more often if I could afford to . . .

I was lucky (?) enough to get to see a brief they give. The basket includes stuff like Ciggies and Booze, which are cheaper over seas which bring the LOA down so if you don't drink or smoke you will be dipping out.
As an RAF Nurse I imagine you do neither and live a healthy booze and smoke free life?
It may have been mentioned before that they also take the cost of a TV licence off your LOA cos you don't have to pay it. But don't account for any satelite costs or cable TV costs?
They also reakon you send the same amount of post when overseas as you do if in UK?????? how do they work that out???

It all boiled down to the same as the AFPRB report. LOA will be set to what they can afford. If costs of stuff go up they will adjust stuff to make it fit the budget!

You're a bit cynical today aren't you? I've been lucky enough to have had 2 full overseas tours. The last one, I was getting an extra £22 a day (at the start, it did drop to £14 by the time I left, but that was because of the lifestyle review I mentioned earlier). The cost of living was a h*ll of a lot cheaper when you consider tax-free petrol, duty-free booze and all the other things we got VAT refunds on. Car insurance was more or less the same as at my previous (London) address. The only thing that went up was my monthly phone bill.

Not sure if anyone knows but LOA rates can change more often than you think as they are linked to the FFR. It is goes up or down by a certain % then the amount of LOA paid also changes.

TBJ I reckon your overseas have been on mainland Europe?
Out in the sunny med the cost of living is about the same as UK?
Prices in the NAAFI follow the UK (except need to account for the exchange rate - £1.50 for a proper loaf of bread!!)
TAX free petrol?
Cost of living may be the same as your LONDON address, ie eating out.

PS They do have the token thing going at Aki.

You're right, it was mainland Europe. While there the only thing I ever bought from the NAAFI was HP sauce (can't live without it) and booze (duty-free). Everything else came from the local economy.

It was the car insurance that was the same as London. Guys who went there from RAF Lincolnshire saw their insurance costs double. Eating out was a hell of a lot cheaper overseas than anywhere in the UK.

uk foodstuffs in Ermes(naafi) expensive
electrics are expensive even with tax refund
aircon very worthwhile
jobs for dependants few and far between, average wage 7 euros ph if you do get one!

Yeap I was entitled to pretty good rate of LOA (higher than wg cdrs), kinda stupid but I got it based on the fact that Army OR8/9 were still having kids I did,nt.
