Swinditz Jan - March 1980.
The booklet given to me at the Careers Office explained that "there is no unnecessary bull in basic training these days" yeah right....!

I too arrived Jan 23! Will search drawers etc for flt details etc.
I remember the DI's as a Sgt L*gan (Geordie) and an Irish Cpl Mc summat.
they only go out to members of the legion this group is open to any Tom Dick or Harry.

I joined sept 76 but can't remember the booklet, but like you say Bitburger the DI's sh*t me up big time, especialy being only 16 and a half. I remember getting a bollocking from an LAC for being on the grass outside the mess !!!

I was there in September '72 (17 Flight - 2 Squadron). Our Sgt was an ex Air Gunner called Roe and was a gentleman. The Cpl's however were sadistic little b*****ds. There was also a nasty rock-ape there too, a Sgt Cavalier. If ever a man needed a Valium sandwich it was him. On the good side I made friends there on day one that I still value today.

Christ, the memories are flooding in - what a thread.
One was on one of the last Swinders intakes (Nov 92 to Feb 93) and recall receiving a similar brochure being handed to me at the AFCO.
I remember that I never had the time for many beers at the Newcomers Club despite being a pi$$head (and continue to be) before I joined. Being the fittest I ever was. The block I was in was Cheshire and, well a slight claim to fame, was in the room where the recruit who slept opposite me is none other than M*** L***** of RAF Band fame. At the time, as a JT recruit, he had wound up a few, including myself, within the Flt about how much money (approx £800) he was receiving as a recruit based on his musical qualifications etc. Sometimes point out the to$$er to friends/family if he appears on telly, usually on Royal Military Tattoo or Royal British Legion Rememberance.
Day before passing-out was one of the coldest on Lincolnshire records - remember it hurt alot whilst smacking the rifle without gloves during final drill practise and noting the sinister smirks the DIs had as they were never satisified cos the drill was not loud enough.
Also recall my parents being fleeced for 20 odd quid for the commerative 30 min passing-out video. Don't know where it went - parents have since split up and was probably sold on ebay knowing my to$$er of a father. Would like a copy if anyone has it if on same intake.
Oh, and throughout my time there, Whitney Houston was No 1 with "I Will Always Love You", which makes me shudder everytime I hear the bl00dy song. Having stated all this, I actually enjoyed my time there and, after reading the previous posts, will always regard the DI staff at Swinders with the highest respect.

Handfuls of nostalgia in this thread. I arrived 29 Dec 76 and passed out early Feb. Memories of snow, DI called Cpl Sw**t, the Halfway House, 18 Flt, red towel round my neck, strange long queues for beer and lots of ex Space Cadets who seemed to know everything. I was a complete fish out of water until well into the technical training bit and then it all seemed to click...

Aye, but that said did my basic here and now bought my first house here!! The circle is complete.
Mind you - does anyone have a old map of the camp showing the layout?
Certain that the site of my old barrack block is just round the corner from me
