hi all, some problems with my renault scenic i wonder if anyone can throw any light on the problems please:

car has been sluggish to start in the morning but ok later in day

today same as above but was kind of pulling when being driven at low speeds - upto 30 mph or so

anyway, parked up for a couple of minutes and when i went to start the car it was dead, but then 10 mins later it started ok again and has been parked up at work for anoher couple of hours and started ok again then too!

continues to pull a bit and also i think i need one or more of the ignition coils changing, been a problem with this model and i have changed them 6 times over the years.

my concern is the car not starting and the pulling and any advice would be much appreciated beofre i stick it in the garage...

thanks

Try removing the throttle body and using carb cleaner to give it a good clean out. Might be worth a try before taking it to the garage.

Try joining a Renault forum. Some of the guys on the car forums are fantastic. When I did mine on a VW Golf, I just used a step by step guide with photos that some dude had posted. Was right proud of myself I was!

When you put your foot down, is that when there is a power loss? My old Scenic a similar problem and it turned out to be the Lambda Sensor, not an expensive or difficult job, but I got the garage to replace it though as heat was needed to remove the old one and then they had to connect it to the computer to check the exhaust emissions.

Just had a look inside and noticed some sort of leak - not oily so unsure from where but looked up the Lambda and saw this:

"Sometimes an apparent lambda sensor problem is not really a faulty sensor. An air leak in the intake or exhaust manifold or even a fouled spark plug, for example, will cause the lambda sensor to give a false lean indication. The sensor reacts only to the presence or absence of oxygen in the exhaust. It has no way of knowing where the extra oxygen came from. So keep that in mind when diagnosing oxygen sensor problems"

anyway, cheers for the info i will get it checked out asap

The problem with my Scenic was that after I changed up a gear the engine response (or lack of it) felt like I’d selected the wrong gear so I’d change down again, but the problem was still there. As the MoT was due, it was checked as part of the emissions test and that’s where the Lambda sensor was found to be at fault.
The garage can easily connect the car to a computer and the Lambda Sensor can be tested.
Not sure how old your car is, but Renaults over 10 years old start to become very expensive to maintain, their electrics aren’t exactly made to last. The garage that sorted mine out last year told me he had scrapped 3 Scenic’s that month due to electrical problems. I got rid of mine as it was getting too expensive, both sun roofs and the passenger electric window failed to open and the rear door locks had both seized, apparently, all common problems.

Loss of power and uneven running are often down to a fouled or failed Air Mass Sensor. This sits between the air filter and the injection system. Cleaning with isopropyl alcohol spray is the first step, with visual inspection to see if it is broken (it's just a wire loop in a housing)

Another test is to disconnect the MAF (Air Mass Sensor) and see how the engine runs. Basically it works by being heated, and the rate of cooling establishing the value, ie air mass reported to the injection system.

Until the MAF is warmed the injection system uses default values to run the engine, this could explain your problem free cold starting.

Just a thought :)

by process of elimination, i found a u/s ignition coil and replaced it with a new one bought for a just over a tenner, all seems well at the mo and it even starts 'ok'.

i was thinking of changing the battery - do you have to reset your immobiliser after this? if so how do you do it?
