A few questions

(sorry just realised this should be in I'm thinking of joining the RAF.)

Hi

I'm looking at joining the RAF as a Weapons System Operator - Non Commissioned, I have a few questions prior to arranging an interview with my local Careers Office.

Sorry if these are simple questions, i have looked but can't find answers:

1.

Accommodation during training
For the first weeks during basic training, you’ll share accommodation with other new recruits so you can get to know them. There's about 14 people per room, so it’s a great opportunity to build friendships. The RAF supplies your accommodation and food and will launder your bedding, but you'll be expected to do your own laundry (there's a launderette on base), look after your kit and equipment, and keep your sleeping area tidy.

Does this mean you spend only the first few weeks in shared accommodation or for the full 9 weeks initial training?

2.

Accommodation on base for married couples, people in Civil Partnerships and families
To qualify for Service Families Accommodation, you need to be married or in a Civil Partnership and due to be on the same base for a minimum of six months. The property will come with up to four bedrooms (based on the size of your family, except for Warrant Officers, who are allowed four-bed quarters as standard). To give you an idea of how much rent you pay, a furnished two-bed property would be around £150 to £280 a month. They can vary a lot in age and condition but we’re always improving and, where necessary, modernising places.

I currently live with my partner and two young children. We are not married but have been living together for 6 years. As we are not married would we be entitled to Service Families Accommodation?

Cheers

simple questions demand simple answers

Yes - the full 9 weeks

No - read what you have quoted. Do you fall into either ??

Sorry, but i dont think my questions were simple, they maybe simple to someone who knows the answers, as with every question if the answer is known.. I only require general advise, not sarcasm, sorry.

In this case, apologies for my stupidity, ..the wrong impression from what i had read:

1. 'For the first weeks during basic training..' - not 100% explanitary

2. No, as said my circumstances are cohabiting with 2 children, i guess i better get married prior to joining lol. - I did think that couples who lived together for a certain number of years were classed as married, by law, but this has proably changed now :pDT_Xtremez_35:.

Just from curiosity, how do long term couples live together when 1 is serving in the RAF, is it private/owned accomodation, or RAF quaters?

Sorry, i don't understand fully how this works,

Thanks!

Hi,

If you are married you will be entitled to SFA (Service Families Accommodation) if you are not you will not be entitled I'm afraid. It may seem a little dated and behind the times but it is strict policy in the RAF.

Couples who wish to reside together either have to rent or buy their own accommodation

Hope this information answers your questions.

Take the sarcasm as a joke mate and smile about it.... you will come across it alot in the RAF. Good luck with your application. :)
