Swimming

Its been too long to remember how much we did, I think maybe once a week or once a fortnight(?) though it might have changed since. If you're worried about being a poor swimmer, no need. I remember when I went through you used to have to swim in a specific order with the best swimmers in the deep end and the poorest swimmers in the shallow end. That way the PTIs can keep an eye on the weaker swimmers. There was also a special biff section in the very shallow end for those that needed arm-bands and/or swimming lessons. That said I think you are encouraged to take swimming lessons before joinin if you think you might need them.

hi mate i started in march this year!

You do 4 lots of swimming over the 9 weeks in total.

during the first few days you do the RAF swimming test which is you in your CS95's and have to swim 25 metres circa and pull yourself out of the pool....its not a pass or fail however if you fail there may be some sports in the RAF which require you to pass the swimming test for!

There are a number of trades that you need to be able to swim to do. Don't worry, that bit isn't checked until you get to phase 1 training.

You will attempt the swim test whilst at RAF Halton, but as far as I am aware, it's not one of the training objectives that you have to pass to graduate.

So what if your not a confident or you are a weak swimmer?
you just swim in the shallow end?

how do they determine who is good and who is a weak swimmer?

They tell you to line up, confident swimmers at the deep end and less confident swimmers at the shallow end. If for any reason a non-confident swimmer has to go in the deep end they are given the option of wearing a floatation belt.

If you don't know how to swim at all they will teach you.

No, it's not true. You swim around the pool in CS95s then pull yourself out of the pool. There's no time limit on it so go as slow as you like. Took me forever but I did it so it doesn't matter. You will never wear boots in or around the swimming pool - can you imagine how dirty it would get if they made recruits do that?
